Mountain Bikers

I was heavy into mountain biking when I was in high school. I couldn't afford much but I purchased a high end frame and figured I would upgrade parts as I got time. I went to college and interest died off. Now I am ready to get back into. However I need to replace some parts on my bike.

What are equivilent replacement parks for the following:

Shimano STX Crankset
Shimano STX Cassettes

SHould I spend the time and money to replace the shifters and derailleurs.

I currently have STX derailleurs and gripshifters.

I have considered a whole new bike but the frame cost me 1K when I purchased it back in '94.

Any places to buy these types of parts online at a reasonable price?

Deore/Alivio are probably about the same range as STX was back in the day.

Shifters/Ders are a nice upgrade. I'd also seriously look at V-brakes if you don't have them. They rule.

Online, you'll just have to dig. Performance, nashbar, etc are good places to start.

I used to bust cranks too. I finally had to buy the top Suntour (back in the day) microdrive cranks.

Sorry...I've been out of it longer than you have.

I road hard and all the time. With that came wrecks and mishaps. I have many teeth missing on my chain rings. Yeah I could just replace then but I figure that I will replace the whole crankset. I am also missing teeth on the cassette

Gotcha. See above for other info. 🙂

That's pretty good. I never damaged a cassette. I guess I had enough skills to keep from crashing that bad....😉

1 huge incompatibility: the cassette spacing on the rear wheel. If you have 7 (or 8, but I'm not positive about this) gears in back or fewer, the space taken up by the cassette is less than a 9-speed. If you upgrade your shifters, you'll need a new rear hub. It might be possible to get a new cassette in whatever you have already, but those parts are old, and newer parts will be lower-quality, since tech trickles down and parts are phased out from the top down. Today, you have to go all the way down to Alivio to get an 8-speed cassette.

If your frame has a 1 1/8" threadless headset, direct-pull compatible bosses, and a 27.2mm seatpost, I would upgrade it. Actually, the seatpost isn't as important, and you should also check the bottom bracket compatibility. Otherwise, you're going to run into an upgrading dead-end somewhere.
