i want to get me a mountain bike but i have absolutely no idea where to start... any web sites you can recommend to learn more about it? and about parts etc. thanks!

mtbr.com has great reviews of every imaginable part and bike.

If you are starting out I suggest getting a hardtail first. A decent new bike can be had from $500 and up. Check for used ones at the site linkified.
Stay clear of department store bikes.
