Hi!

I have a very old, Trek 7000 ZX Aluminum series mountain bike that I bought back somewehere between 1996 adn 1998.

By now, the crank set (the main 3 RINGS) are pretty wasted and would like to replace them with "something"

The set is supposed to be a shimano STX model....21 speed, don't know much more....

What can I buy that would fit this particular bike?

Can someone please link me to the set I am looking for? or to a new, complete set that would fit my bike?

Thanks in advance!

If it's just the rings, those are called the chainrings. You can often replace them quite cheaply. Check pricepoint, nashbar, and jensonusa.

cheaper to get a new crankset than 3 rings
you probably have an english SQUARE TAPER MTB-width bottom bracket. as long as you avoid the ISIS-splined cranksets which are made for newer bottom brackets you will be okay

You'll need a crank pulling tool as well, just have the shop replace it unless you want to learn to wrench on your bike. It's not difficult to replace the bottom bracket (rod, bearings that the cranks attach to) which is what it sounds like you need and not a complete crank set.

If you do it yourself read plent on how to lubricate, very important.

New Crank + BB + crank puller + pedal wrench + BB tool = $100+

Save up for a new bike.

If you just "brought it back", odds are you will need to replace more than the crank.

Well if the front chain rings are shot then the rear cassette is probably do for replacement as well along with the chain.

STX used a unique non-standard chainring set. I'll rummage around and see if I can find you some STX rings, but if that doesn't pan out, you'd want to pick up a different crankset (and possibly a different axle/bearing unit, commonly called a "bottom bracket").

Ok, if it's the middle and inner ones that are the main problem, I've found a couple I could stick in a padded envelope and send. PM me an address if interested.

Thank you all for the help...much appreciated!

I love my bike..it's been through a lot with me and it has served me well...I would rather fix it than go out looking for a replacement!
