Question Mount 15mm NVMe PCB into 7mm case

I have a few Nytro 3330 SAS SSD 3.84TB. Eleven of these are 7mm in height and fit nicely into an 8 bay enclosure. The remaining ones are 15mm high. When I opened one of them, I see that the top metal case is just higher with lots of empty space but blocks with thermal paste to make contact with the chips. I was thinking, that theoretically these covers could be replaced with smaller ones to make these drives slimmer. I do not have spare cases though and am certain the chips require a metal heatsink. Has anyone tried this before?
