I played around with the Verizon phones again tonight and decided on the V710. I can't get it for a week or so while the contract is changed over, however. Any issues or special notes I should know about? I've heard the Bluetooth has issues...if I get the Bluetooth headset that Verizon sells, will that have any issues? etc.

You can use any bluetooth headset on the market and have it work with the v710. I have a Jabra BT250 and it works well with my phone. From what I've heard, I have a v710 with old firmware, the new v710's allow for OBEX but, you cannot transfer ringtones and pictures. I could be wrong though.

the bluetooth issues mentioned is that it cant be used to send/receive ringtones/images and i believe there are some issues being ironed out with being able to use the dial up networking profile. other than that, bluetooth headset connectivity and such works fine.

also, i may try and stall out a little bit longer because rumors are that the v710's predecessor, the e815 is coming out at the end of this month. you can either pick up the newer motorola phone for verizon or perhaps see another price dip on the v710 (i believe its currently far if my memory serves me correctly though). oh well. other than that, im content with the phone (battery leaves a bit to be desired, but reception is *outstanding*!) but will soon be ditching it for the samsung a970 once it comes out later this year.

But will Verizon castrate the e815 like it did to the v710?

I doubt the new model will immediately be a "free phone". I got my V710 for free on the new every 2 plan. Also, don't get your phone from one of them Phone stores. Get it directly from a Verizon shop..

Hacking my V710 was easy, after digging around and reading as much as I could about the task.
I picked up the USB cable for about $12 shipped on Ebay.
Since then I went crazy with ringtones and backgrounds. Easy to transfer via BT after seem hacking.

It's not a bad deal as it is right now. $99 for the phone plus the accessory kit, which has a wired headpiece, case, and car charger. If I have time tonight I'm going to get it.

My friend just got that phone! It's very very nice! The GUI is quick to navigate, though, somewhat clumsy in my opinion. (I'm use to my fast/easy-access Nokia menus) It just seems to take a while to get to certain functions on the phone. He likes it a lot, though, and the reception is super.

The phone is a little big, but nice. They sold the last v710 in the store to the guy in front of me last night though, bummer. That same guy said this was his fourth or fifth phone, that it kept breaking. He also said he had purchased the phone for all of his employees and they were all having problems with it. I dunno if I want to get it now. None of the other ones can do Bluetooth without an adapter. Hmm...

I also stopped by the Cingular store and played with the Razr phone. Wow that phone is sweet. I didn't think it was too wide at all, I thought it was great. Slide it right into your pocket. I asked the Verizon rep if it was possible to transfer the phone but she said no. Bummer again. Oh well.

You can get a Razr for free now at Amazon. Unless everyone you know is on Verizon, Cingular works great in Connecticut from my experience. I've had no problem in the Greenwich or Hartford areas. You should visit the Cingular forum over at Howardforums, and ask about your area.

Yeah, that's the only problem. Cingular is fine with me, and it even has better minutes for the price, but everybody in my family is on Verizon. Verizon gets amazing service in Hartford, too, so it's one of those "oh well" things. I think I may get a basic cell phone instead of the v710, because of the problems, but I dunno.

That guy is full of crap. It's his fourth or fifth phone, and he had to buy it? That's called physical damage, the guy is obviously hard on phones. I've sold a number of 710s, had none come back so far, and as with any cell phone if you treat it the way you're supposed to (like a tiny fragile electronic device DUH) then you won't have a problem with it. My fiancee has one, and I'd consider her fairly rough on her phones, although she cares for them much better than anybody else I've ever seen, she's had zero problems with it.

That's a good point. He was a bigger guy, might have been in construction. I talked to the rep about returns and whatnot, and she said that I have 15 days to try it out, and after that it's under manufacturer warranty, so I'd have to get it repaired at the Verizon store. Well, I will give it a shot. It's a cool phone. I like the size a lot, especially the buttons. Is there a way you can backup your contacts just in case it fails?

Here's my shopping list so far:

1. Motorola v710 with the free accessory kit (case, car charger, and wired headset)
2. Wireless headset for the car
3. Car mount for the phone
4. Nicer case
5. Dual-charger (for phone & headset)
6. Memory card (?)
7. Data transfer cable (ebay)

I love my v710. When you get it do this to get free access to yahoo:
enter: Menu + 0 + 73887 + *
enter: 000000
Select Web Sessions
Create New Entry
Name it 'Yahoo'
Change the Gateway IP to 66.218.71.218
Set server type to HTTP
Change port 1 to 80
Set Cache start-up to OFF
save
Launch it

Now you can read your yahoo mail, check sports scores, read news, etc without paying verizon $ every month. It does use your minutes though, which is why I only use it at night or on weekends. You cant leave yahoo's site though. The same trick works for google too, just change the IP to 64.233.187.104 and you can search for adresses on google local.

Other than the Bluetooth crippling, the v710 is a great phone.

Go here for tons of info on the phone: Howard Forums V710
Also I think amazon has the best price for the transflash memory card.

Is there any reason why I should buy it from a Verizon store and not through Amazon? It's $150 at the Verizon store and it's -$25.01 at Amazon, lol.

Try returning it to Amazon, or having any work done. Always best to deal with a local shop. Stick to Radioshack/CircuitCity or Verizon directly, anybody else isn't worth it.

Even though the Amazon store link is through Verizon?

There is no reason not too. I bought my phone on ebay, but I had a problem with the bluetooth. Cingular sent me a replacement though, because the phone wasn't a year old. Verizon is known for their service, so I'm sure they would do the same thing if needed. Have one of your pals who's on Verizon call 611 and ask them directly if you are concerned.

I found it best to get my phones via the Verizon 800 number. The people in the Verizon stores work on commision, and they don't give you the time of day unless they know they're getting the sale. The staff on the 800 # do not work on commision, and since I upgrading one of my phones to a non-V710 since couldn't have a camera, and it was considerably less than the $100 they give me for new every 2.. she threw in a free leather case and car charger. She said she could do that because she's not on commision. They ship it 2 day Fed Ex, no charge.

I have nothing against salesmen in general and I understand they're trying to make a living, but I've rarely been somewhere, where the salespeople on commision act like that. Every customer should be treated the same.
