What is a cheap phone you all recommend I can buy (even like on eBay) to try out Virgin's coverage before committing to a multi-hundred dollar phone?

Either Best Buy and Radio Shack will give you a 30-day return on any Virgin Mobile phone. Just buy the one you want and try it for real...

Sold out at Best Buy online.

I'm told it's on backorder, and I even pre-ordered it!

I've had this guy for a week, and i'm loving it. I've been on Virgin with the POS Intercept since October, and can say that in the NYC area coverage is excellent. However, the Triumph's antenna seems weak. It routinely reports signal strenth 10-15db lower than the Intercept. I haven't noticed any spots where I don't get service however, and I haven't talked on it enough to form an opinion about it that way.

The phone itself is amazing, though. it's as thin as my roommate's iPhone 4, and feels just as responsive, but it has a bigger (GorillaGlass!) screen. Battery life is mediocre, however. I unplugged it at 100% at 7:30 this morning, and now at 3pm (7.5hrs later) i'm at 64% I only checked my email a couple times and spent 15 minutes playing a casual game, but service in my office is relatively middling, so I think it has to put more power into the antenna.

Very disappointed to hear that. I work in an office in Manhattan, deep inside a building, and no other provider except for Verizon has good signal strength here. The AT&T people occasionally have a few bars. Still, I was going to say goodbye to Verizon, because I have virtually no service in my 23rd floor apartment in Brooklyn, and move over to Virgin mobile and get that Motorola Triumph phone. But after hearing your complaints about weak signal, I might as well stay with Verizon. Then again, $35/month is very tempting.

Virgin Mobile = no contract, no ETF, no activation fee, and phones from Radio Shack & Best Buy have a 30-day money back guarantee.

Since everyone's performance will vary depending on reception, the best way to find out is to simply buy a phone and try the service out for yourself. You can use the phone for 30 days and then return it and cancel your plan.

All you risk is $35 for your first month of service.

Anyone compare Triumph reception to Optimus V? I got OV last week again (this time from BB) to get grandfathered under the $25 plan. But I have fairly marginal reception at work, so any sort of degradation would be a no-no.

People are reporting -5 to-7 dB on average worse than the OV..

The Optimus v and the Triumph are both wifi enabled. If you have wifi in your office and the $10 month line2 app, you can make phone calls over wifi and not pay for any virgin mobile minutes.

There is no 800/850 MHz radio on this phone only 1900, meaning penetration into buildings will be worse . Why the hell did they cheap out on this aspect:thumbsdown:

Can you check your battery usage to see what has been sucking up the juice? If it says 50% or more of your battery use was used on Cell Standby, there may be something you can try.

I'm not sure if it's the phone or Virgin's service, or their installation of Android, or some combination of the three, but my Optimus V had terrible battery life. From full to nearly dead after an average day of light use. I noticed that Cell Standby was using 60% or more of the battery so did a bit of searching and came across this.

http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-v/293583-3g-drops-standby-battery-drain-solutions.html

There seems to be some disagreement on the exact cause, but there are a couple things listed there that you could try. Right now, I'm sitting at 61% battery left after being unplugged for 1d 2h 57m. That's double what I used to get, since making a couple of the tweaks from that discussion. Namely setting WiFi to Never turn off (I turn it off manually with a widget when I'm away from a hotspot) and also the tweak of changing to CDMA Only then back to CDMA Auto.

Can't promise it will work the same way on that phone, but it might be worth a shot.

I guess those of us who pre-ordered online are getting screwed. I should have waited till the last minute like everyone else! :D

Has anyone bought the Triumph and used it for a couple of weeks?

I'm considering it, but the reviews aren't inspiring.

I've heard some positive things coming from places like XDA, but the last I heard was that the RIL was having some issues. And since the phone is on a smaller regional carrier, it doesn't have as wide a user base on other national carriers. Takes longer.
