Does virgin mobile have retail stores where you can play with actual phones/check out the service? On the website it just lists walgreens and cvs, these would probably just have the prepaid phones in a plastic container on the shelf.

Anyone comment on data speeds? Preferably in the chicago area.

Best Buy does, out here at least.

Actually, it is a rebadged Huawei Ascend X aka Ideos X6. If you don't believe me, you can always look up the specs yourself. Same screen size, same battery size, same on board memory, same size battery same identical shape.

This is essentially the Ideos X6, with some minor differences for appeal. The X6 had no front facing camera, or built in compass. The X6 also used the Single core, Snapdragon MSM8255, 1000 MHz, where as the Moto uses the a more effecient and CDMA friendly version MSM8655 running at 1000 MHZ, same as the Thunderbolt. Outside of those very minor differences, and the placement of the mic and speaker to be more in line with Moto phones, this is the Ideos X6 lock, stock and barrel.

It has the same GPU, the same amount of on-board memory, the same screen size, the same button placement, even has the same size battery.

Brand recognition is a huge part of phone sales, plus it was probably part of the Sprint/Moto dealings. They had to put a cheap Android onto VM, they simply agreed to slap their name onto the Ascend X.

No more news on these? I hope they get better reception than the optimus. Do motorola phones have better antennas than lgs or is it old wives tale?

I'm guessing $300. I'll give it a shot if I can't get over to Verizon by the 7th.

from the Engadget article comments:

It LOOKS similar, but a lot of phones look alike. There's subtle differences, though - I honestly don't think Motorola would slap their name on somebody elses' hardware, when they build their own. It's definitely got that Motorola "look" to the back - see the Droid, DroidX.

I've been thinking of getting the Optimus V now that it's $150. I don't see it at $120 at Best Buy; where did you guys get that price?

$300 is actually pretty reasonable...

Keep it 2 years and it's $13/month. Add in the prepaid plan, and it's $39/month.

I think $300 is excellent price for this phone. If I didn't have another year left on the contract I would buy this phone and go prepaid. I don't need the latest or the greatest and savings are attractive. I could cut my monthly phone bill by half.

It's the selected vendor that changes. I guess for redirect/referral purposes, it automatically chooses Amazon as the vendor. If you search for it on Amazon, it chooses the cheapest (shopcelldeals) as the vendor.

Wow, for $300 this is a great deal and is very tempting. This phone is the closest Americans can get to the European notion of "pay for the phone, save on the service" going forward.

OH WHAT THE FUCK!

If you link to it from Anandtech the fucking price goes up 40 bucks!

ASSHOLES!

Go to Amazon.
Search for the Optimus V.
Pay less.

Hahaha. Very nice to see it for $130, though. At that price it's a great phone, $70 less than what I would've paid for it a month ago. This, combined with the $25 plan=pure win.

Actually, the $130 price is from seller "shopcelldeals" (no free shipping) through amazon.
Amazon itself sells the phone for $167, with free shipping.
