From time to time I experience extremely slow download and upload speeds with my Motorola Surfboard 5100 modem. I am using Rogers Extreme High Speed here in SW Ontario. Occassionally speeds crawl to 0.5kbps-5kbps (roughly) and pings jump to the 4000-5000ms range.
The hitch is that this only occurs when the modem is hooked up through a router. I have tried both a D-Link DI-514 router and an SMC Wireless G, and both have the same problem. When I reset the router, it will work fine for a few seconds and then the speeds crawl again. If I release the DHCP lease, and hook the modem up directly to my desktop the speeds are fine.
If I wait a day or two the problem goes away, but I'm really at a loss as to why. I suspect if I call Rogers tech support they will tell me it is a problem with my router (which they did originally, and which is why I replaced the D-Link which I guess was a fruitless endeavour) and will not be able to help.
Any ideas?
