Motorola MD671 cordless 5.8ghz phone $35AR @ Amazon

linky here (hopefully it works for you)

I have one of these already. Great battery power. Very clear. Fully-featured base + handset. Speakerphone is powerful. Picked up another one just cuz it was so great of a deal! 5.8ghz is great - no interference from wireless network freqs such as 802.11b or g (which run at 2.4).

Only downside is that extra handsets aren't available anymore. Perhaps this is last year's model? You can find em on ebay - for less than the price of the full phone, ha!

You can also get the MD681, which comes with a 3 mailbox answering machine and is part of the self-same expandable headset series, for $49.99 after a (different) $30 rebate, or both $84.87 after the two, non-competing $30 rebates.

Anyone have any personal experience with these phones?

Oh, and btw, yesterday I, too, got the bogus, higher Amazon price from their site that Mir96TA above saw.

Make sure that it's True 5.8 Ghz. Some of the phones labelled 5.8 Ghz are only 5.8 Ghz one way and 2.4 Ghz on the other which makes them horrible when you have a wireless network and defeats the purpose of 5.8 Ghz entirely.
I should know, I have one and the sound quality was unacceptable when the router was on. I switched to an "Old" 900 Mhz Panasonic and it's much, much better.

As an aside, what I would really really like on a phone is the capability of filtering incoming calls by numbers. For example, if it's an "unknown number" or toll free, route it to voicemail automatically. Even sweeter , enter your own blacklisted numbers (debt collectors, telemarketers, annoying ex) and have them get a busy tone all the time or drop the connection.
I know it's easy to fake Caller IDs but this method still takes care of 99.99% of all unwanted calls.

Is there any such phone on the market?

just a note about wireless interference, i own a panisonic 2.4 ghz phone....and it interferes like crazy, or used to ... then I tried changing the channel my wireless network uses from ch. 6 to ch. 11 ... and since i've never had my connection lost when the phone rang...

so if you have problems w/interference, might want to try changing the wireless channel before looking to buy a 5.8ghz phone, which from the above post may just be as bad

just my 2cents

I got my phone! So it'll be the 2nd MD671 phone in my place. It's a true 5.8ghz - there's no wireless interference. Got a 802.11b AP sitting right next to it, in fact.

Yay!

I have the 681 with an additional handset. Great phone. The digital answering machine is the clearest I have heard. Consumer Reports reported it was very good as well. I'm very happy with this phone.

It's amazon playing their usual pricing games. Keep an eye on it and check back periodically...the price should drop again.
