Pardon me for the noobish question, but what do you do with an unlocked phone? You'd have to get a SIM card for it with some network, right, and sign onto one of their plans?

Does it end up saving you money to buy your own unlocked phone vs. just getting a phone thru that network? Lots of times they package free phones with their plans anyway.

My understanding of unlocked is that the full features of the phones programming are available and configurable by the user. The phones you buy from the providers are usually locked down in a manner that without a passcode you can't get into the configuration options for configuring the phone to connect to different networks and other settings they don't want people messing with.
I think it also means that as long as it's compatible with a providers network and they allow you to use unlocked phones, if you know the settings you could set it up yourself. I'm not up on what types of protocols are in use by which providers though so I don't know which cell providers this phone could be used with.

It's good if you want a new phone, but you do not want to extend your contract. Upgrading to a new phone usually means you extend your contract for 1 or 2 years. Doing it without an extension leads to you paying up the nose for a phone from your provider. If you do not care about the contract extension, then you are better off going through the provider as you could get a newer phone for a cheaper price.

If you have GSM provider (ATT or Tmobile), then all you have to do is put your sim card in the phone and you are done. If you have Verizon, then you may have to call and have them get the phone working.
