Motorola Droid 3 official

The Droid 3 is upon us! Well, it is if you live in China and don't mind calling it the Milestone 3. A new XT883 model has just been made official by Motorola during China Telecom's CDMA Summit, touting the tagline "the third Milestone" and a new five-row slideout QWERTY keyboard. The salient specs include a 4-inch touchscreen with qHD (540 x 960) resolution, a dual-core processor capable of driving 1080p video recording, an 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, up to 32GB of built-in storage, and of course, Android 2.3 as the shipping OS. A pretty compelling package, we think you'll agree. It's coming to China this summer, though Moto could still be crafty enough to squeeze the US launch in before actual units start shipping to Yao Ming's homeland. Because, well, who's ever heard of a Milestone coming before a Droid?

Pretty good looking, much better than the Droid 2. Also the screen should be great since Moto uses great quality screens.

Real, but not spectacular, if the previous rumor of 512mb RAM is true. And no LTE, and definitely the pentile Atrix screen.

Oh yeah, and I believe the processor is a TI OMAP with the same SGX540 GPU that's in my first-gen Galaxy S.

It was a hard decision, but i decided to go with the htc desire z (t mobile g2) over the droid 2. However, since htc no longer has a qwerty android phone in their lineup, nor any upcoming, it looks like the droid 3 might be my next phone.

A few things im concerned about are the size, the screen, and motoblur.

I think a 4" screen, especially in a qwerty slider formfactor might be too bulky for me; i already feel that the samsung galaxy s is too big for me to use comfortably as a phone, and that is the smallest 4" phone that i know of.

I have been unimpressed by the screen on the atrix, so i hope this uses a different screen.

Finally, i hope motorola doesnt include motoblur on this. With motorola locking down their bootloaders, i dont jnow if i can live with that.

Honestly though, options for a qwerty slider android phones seem pretty slim these days. With the g2, the epic 4g, and the evo shift nearing eol with no replacement in sight, i think this may be the only qwerty slider of this generation.

It's not really that good the DX has a better screen imo. These pentile screens are a big reason I'm no longer considering Moto for my next one.

I don't get all the nerd-rage for the X2 screen. As long as you don't set the background to solid green and hold it three microns from your eye, it looks fantastic.

It looks identical to the D2. As far as screen quality, IMHO the DX and the D2 both are mediocre in screen quality. Put them next to an AMOLED (Dinc) or IPS screen (Eee Transformer, Nook Color) and they look very blah. Although, overall build quality is very good on the the Moto phones.

It is especially noticeable with text though, which is the biggest problem apart from the checkerboard pattern and color issues.

Well there have been tests done and the Droid series of phones are the best in color reproduction. Everything else was either too oversaturated or undersaturated.

If it is anything like an Atrix screen then no thanks. Whole point of qHD is that things like text look better, while on the Atrix text looks like my Windows 2000 box before Cleartype was invented. Completely unacceptable.

Give me a non-Pentile WVGA display any day over a qHD Pentile display. Pentile and WVGA? Just terrible. I would prefer the iPhone 1 screen.

With the Pentile it is like it is a higher def display with only a regular def amount of pixels. I read on my phone all the time and what Pentile does to text is barbaric.

At least with non-Pentile WVGA there is enough pixels for the resolution. Text doesn't look super sharp, but it also doesn't look like anti-analyzing is broken like with Pentile.

Oh come on, if qHD with pentile is so bad, then what are all the Galaxy S phones on WVGA? Like mosaics?
Pentile < non-pentile
but the Galaxy S gives you SAMOLED color vibrancy and perfect blacks in return. All Moto's pentile qHD LCD gets over a non-pentile WVGA LCD is higher resolution -- but with fewer subpixels, it actually worsens sharpness. They might have done better to keep the original panel and change the pixel density setting in software.

And Samsung used pentile because of tech limitations. We know you can get qHD on a 4" LCD... and to sick to pentile LCD even at 4.3" is just Moto cheaping out.
