Motorola Cliq running Android 2.1?

My dad wanted to run far, far away from AT&T so I signed him up for T-mobile and got a motorola cliq coming in the mail. I'm thinking of rooting the phone and upgrading android 1.5 to 2.1 - is that possible yet, and is the performance decent enough to make it worth while?

I know the cliq is a pretty basic, low powered phone but I'm thinking moto-blur might be a little too teenie bop for him, and he really does like google maps nav (which I don't believe is available on the stock cliq, right?).

If it's your dad's, don't root it. Rooting has tons of quirks and bugs and since it's your dad's phone, he probably won't want to deal with it.

I'm not sure you can root the Cliq yet. All the MOTOBLUR stuff can be removed off the homescreen, it's just widgets.

According to wikipedia:
Early April 2010, T-Mobile and Motorola released a new update, which includes:
Provides faster GPS performance for applications such as Google Maps, Geotagging of photos and other GPS functions
Updated Google Mobile Services application provides access to the latest Android 1.5 compatible versions of Google applications such as Maps, Talk, YouTube, Market, and more
This leads me to believe it comes with Google Maps.

Google Maps but not Google Navigation. Hope T-Mo has good reception for him.

Motoblur stuff on the home screen is just widgets. Some underlying stuff as well, more accounts integrated behind the scenes but I don't what differences exist between the 1.5 and 1.6 versions. I don't think it has the BT hands-free dialing either.

I did not know that.

Android 1.5 however does not have Google Navigation. It has google maps, but not the turn by turn navigation.

I should have known this. My MT3G shipped with 1.5 and I put off the 1.6 update for a while and when the Navigation update was released I couldn't get it till I updated.

That's the Cliq forum over at modmymoto. I searched a bit on XDA, but those guys are pretty much a pure HTC forum. There doesn't seem to be a 2.1 port/build for the Cliq that I can find.

Thanks guys - sorry for the lack of follow up. I convinced him to cancel his order (phew, barely in time!) and instead go with a droid.

Rottie, it runs 1.5. MOTOBlur doesn't run on 1.6 or higher yet.

Edit: Ok, I'm wrong about that - the Cliq XT runs 1.6 w/MOTOBlur. I don't know why they haven't offered it as an upgrade for the regular Cliq.

The Devour runs on 1.6 as well. Over on Hofo, sounds like both the Droid 2 and Shadow have had some test firmwares with MB on them as well, though it is unknown if either will ship with it or not.

I actually hope the Droid 2 does come with it, should make an easy transition for me.
