Motorcyclists, worst vehicles to follow behind for turbulence?

Man, I was riding home last night on the freeway doing about 80mph and following a Jeep Liberty and noticed how much buffeting I was experiencing while following it. It was probably worse than any other vehicle I've noticed. Not surprising given the shape of it though. Big trucks are pretty bad too but for passenger vehicles this has to be one of the worst.

Any SUV or large pickup will disrupt a lot of air so I tend to pass them and prefer to follow cars as they don't create so much turbulence and they are easier to see around/over. Plus you generally don't have shit falling out of them or off of them either.

Dump trucks. The wake they leave is massive, and they're constantly throwing sand and dirt in your face. Livestock haulers are a close second.

Why don't we just make an "Official Motorcycles Thread" and leave it all in there, eh?

We would then consolidate AT Garage to the following:
Official Cars Thread
Official Trucks Thread
Official SUV Thread
Official Vans Thread
Official Mini-vans Thread
Official RV Thread
Official Garden Motors Thread
ect...

Can we get an Official SUVs Suck Thread too? :awe:

I think that was your thinly veiled purpose of this thread to begin with 😉

Say what you will, but I guarantee you that you cannot haul the same amount of stuff in your car as I have hauled in my SUV, so it serves its purpose 😀

Would an Official Hate on Obnoxious Bicyclists Thread go here or OT? 😛

Ooh, yea, I hate those guys. Why should I have to share the road with some guy who isn't smart enough to figure out that pushing down with your foot onto a lever is SOOOOO much easier than peddling your ass around?

Semi's are really bad, so are minivans, but the big pickups down here in TX are ridiculous.

I'm thinking a double deck car hauler must have some horrendous wake. It certainly has horrid aerodynamics up front to get things started.

and so on ad infinitum.

I've never noticed a difference, but I've always assumed that anyone I get near is going to try and kill me, so I tend to keep my distance.

A little off topic but interesting, when I ride with one particular friend on the freeway, we ride side by side. Since the highway patrol are pretty much the only people that do that, car's always change lanes to let us by. Makes it pretty easy to cruise at respectable speed.

Yeah, in rush hour traffic on the freeways here in SoCal I don't have the luxury of being able to keep a large gap to traffic in front of me. If you leave a large gap you'll have someone right on your ass and someone cutting in front of you in the gap you created. I generally follow a few car lengths behind or more if I can't see around or through the vehicle in front of me.
