Motorcyclists, help me out!

New job. I'm wanting to finally get another motorcycle. First bike was an old Honda Nighthawk 450. Great to learn on, but not too great for any kind of distance. I was mainly shopping Harleys; the new Sportster with the rubber-mounted 1200 Evolution engine is what's got my eye.

Harley would happily finance me at the lowest interest rate for a Road King, so the Sportster's not exactly going to break me.

But then I made the mistake of looking at Moto Guzzi's current line... The California Titanium is simply a beautiful bike, and it would be a great ride, plus it would be unique.

Pros and cons:

Moto Guzzi California Titanium
Pro: Much more bike for the same price as the Harley; Shaft drive; Unique.
Con: Not a Harley; Resale value is questionable; Guzzis have a worse reliability reputation than Harleys even though they're supposed to be better now.

Harley Davidson Sportster XL1200R
Pro: A Harley; Sportier; Classic "cafe racer" look; Sounds like a Harley; Resale value is absolutely insane (in a good way); re-designed engine mounts mean the sportster no longer shakes a person to death; Did I mention that it's a Harley?
Con: A lot less unique; Belt drive (better than chain, but not as nice as shaft drive); less of a "value" when compared to the Guzzi.

Anyone with experience with either bike want to help me out here? Or at least talk me down? 😛

"Much more bike for the same price"
i think we can stop there. also, why is being a harley a pro? im really not a motorcycle guy, but domestic=inferior (in reputation and sex appeal, though not necessarily a worse product) as far as im concerned.

Those are tourers. Now that the Valkrie is gone (the Rune is fugly) Honda doesn't have a good cruiser to put up against the two bikes I'm looking at. I don't care for the look of Honda's V-Twins. The radiator for the liquid cooling just ruins it.

Regarding the other person's question about why Harley is a pro: I can buy a Harley for $11,000 and sell it 5 years later with 40,000 miles on it for $9,500. Any other bike at that age and mileage would be in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. Also, Harley's buck the other trends you mention as well. The owner's group for Harley riders is amazing and the number of opportunities to get out and meet other riders is second to none.
