Local news story: http://sammamish.komonews.com/content/man-killed-crash-after-doing-motorcycle-tricks-sr-202

A 22-year-old Sammamish man was killed overnight when he lost control of his motorcycle while doing a high-speed wheelie on SR 202 near Ames Lake Road.

The Washington State Patrol says that a trooper was doing a traffic stop just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday when a 2007 Kawasaki ZX600P ridden by 22-year-old Jared Thomas went by him going east at a very high speed, with the rider doing a wheelie in the process.

A few minutes later, a motorist stopped him and said there was a motorcycle down further down the highway.

When the trooper arrived, he found the motorcycle against a guardrail, but there was no rider. He then got out a thermal imaging device and started searching the area. Thomas' body was found well off the roadway in a wooded area.

It is believed that Thomas crashed his motorcycle into the guardrail, was thrown from the bike and slammed into a tree. Although he was wearing a helmet, he died instantly.
The "wooded area" is the area behind our detached garage. Thank God I wasn't the one who found him. I was awake and heard a motorcycle fly by the house at about that time, but the garage is far enough from the house that I didn't hear the accident (we'd shut the house up for the night).

This should be a reminder to everyone to keep it on the track if you want to do stunts or push yourself to see how fast you really can go. This poor kid's mother's present for Mother's Day ended up being the news that her son was dead. Please don't anyone do that to your family.

Wow, that stinks for everyone involved though I can't say I'm horribly surprised with the outcome if he was popping wheelies on public roads.

I didn't know cops were carrying thermal imaging in squad cars though.

Some do, some don't. One of our cruisers has a thermal camera attached to the spotlight.

Great, now ZV's gonna have a ghost haunting him.

All kidding aside, that's incredibly sad for everyone involved, and such an unnecessary waste.

That's interesting, I can see how it would come in handy. It would light up anybody trying to hide in brush and could be useful in helping find people that are lost or hurt.

My biggest concern right now is that this kid was apparently a very well-respected teacher at a local dojo. The news crew that was out here was saying something about him being a level three something-or-other. Anyway, there has been practically a parade of cars going by here and stopping at the curve. Now, this is a blind corner with no space to pull off the road, so it will be a small miracle if none of these people paying tribute cause an accident by being stopped in the middle of the corner.

If that's becoming a problem, it might be worth a call to your local PD or highway department to see if they could put up temporary cones/signs on each side of the corner.

I feel sorry for the family and the kid. Everyone does something stupid here and there, he just didn't make it out alive. *RIP*

In before "kid was a dumb ass and it's the government's fault."

A young man died and you're worried that the bike was incorrectly identified. WTF is wrong with you?

Yeah. I don't mean to sound harsh but the reality is you take your life in your hands EVERY TIME you get on a bike. Doing stunts in public streets at high speeds is pure Darwin. It's like ODing on Heroin. Sure the high is amazing, but what are your chances of survival? He choose to do something that could result in his death.

I live every day of my life with a terminal illness, but I don't bitch about it or pretend it justifies me doing stupid shit that could end my life sooner. Hate to say it but in this case I'd say he got what was coming to him; not everyone learns their life lessons with a scraped knee. We all day eventually.

Why did they call the ZX6R a ZX600P? =O

Learn to google?

The official Kawasaki product code for the 2007 ZX-6R is ZX600P7F (or ZX600P7FL for the CA model). The manual and official documents typically use the ZX600P code.

The bike is hauling ass at a high rate of speed and the police officer is stopped and out of his car. Think about that for a minute.

Which is exactly why the moron chose to pull that stunt when he pulled it.

Karma is a real bitch.

Hi smartass. Welcome to the party. I'm fully aware it's the model classification, I'm not an idiot. However, it's the equivalent to a serial prefix and you don't go calling your toaster by the first generic 4 digits of it's serial number, you call it by the name and model listed on the packaging.

Seriously. Get out more. You know what I meant and your pathetic attempt to look superior simply has me rolling my eyes. It was an obvious crack on the competency of the article.

I understand the lad was a squid, and I agree that squids often come to an untimely end, I just find it very odd that you focused on the bike.

Cop calls a local motorcycle dealer, "How many bikes did you sell today? Six? OK, two are still riding somewhere..."

Well, we don't know the speed of the bike, but cops pull people over all the time doing 60,70,80,90mph.

They have higher expectations for cars to stop than bikes. A bike doing 100mph past a cop can usually quite quickly accelerate to 140mph+, a cop can't even get close to catching him from a standing start. He can radio ahead, but the chances of the bike pulling over are negligible without him wrecking or having to take him down.
