Motorcycle Riders - Windnoise

Why not just get some earbuds and listen to music? Also a good helmet can go a long way. My hjc is loud as hell but its because it doesn't seal at the neck. A good shark or scorpion helmet will and helps a ton.

I buy the foam earplugs at the hardware store in bulk. They block out plenty of wind noise and are very effective if they are inserted properly.

If not inserted properly they can actually do more harm than good.

Once I started wearing earplugs I just don't ride without them anymore. It is so much less fatiguing on a long ride not to mention the benefits for your long term hearing.

i picked up a pair of surefire EP4s and did not find the noise reduction to be enough for my comfort - i'm not sure this is the result of the incorrect size (i got a medium)

i use foam plugs - when they're in right, they work like a friggin charm. when they're not, you know it all too well 😛

They are so much better than the foam ones though, just from a convenience standpoint of having to shove those foamies in my ear. Maybe you can try plugging the "canal?"

Foam ear plugs. I have a scala blue tooth setup and I can hear my music and take phone calls fine with the volume up.

I have an HJC modular helmet. Note that modulars are more windy. My older Bell full face is quieter.

Lastly, windshield choice can help a lot if you have the option for one.

Actually, what prompted me to ask this question was my windshield. I just installed a ZeroG Double Bubble and found the wind noise was worse than stock. 😵

Shoulda stumped for the Sport Touring model. 🙁

Buffeting is a bitch. I'm thinking of trying a product called the laminar lip.

I use a Zune and a pair of aging Sennheiser earbuds. I need to get a different set of headphones though because after a while the earbuds will work themselves loose and it does more harm than good.

A better helmet is also a smart option, especially one that seals around the neck. I upgraded from a Vega helmet to the Scorpion EXO-1000 and it's night and day.

I've found this is often the case...

There's no way to eliminate yourself from wind on a standard/sportbike... It's more about how and where the wind hits you.. I prefer the stockish screens that push steadily against my chest rather than the touring ones which bobble my head all around

Well then two things are probably happening.

- The windshield may keep the bugs off you but is creating turbulent air behind the shield. So you either made the wrong choice in shield or are too tall for the shield.

- The shield and your riding height may be directing the air in such a way that it is creating a upward suction on your helmet and hence creating more noise, and also more fatigue.

I went with an adjustable shield on mine (height and angle). It took some tinkering with the adjustments to get the wind marginalized. Unfortunately yes, if you don't buy a fully dressed tourer or sport tourer the shield options tend to be limited.

There are a few companies that make custome or generic windshield extensions, and one of those may help you.

On the ride in to work, here's what I found.

With the stock windscreen, it lets wind hit my face - which helps with ventilation and prevents the helmet shield from fogging up. However, it is noisy.

With the double bubble, its more noisy than stock - but less wind hitting the helmet. The shield fogged up pretty easily even with the vents open.

It's topsy turvy. 😕

Hmm. That might be right

You should try riding a naked bike (one without fairings and windscreens you pervs). It's good for building those neck muscles. 😛

I had a small windscreen on my bike the winter before last but it pushed the air right up under my helmet unless I was in a tuck behind it. No matter what I did it was loud...much louder than without it. I took it off last summer and never bothered with it again. I think the bike looks better without it anyway.

I have a streetfightered-out TL1000S with no screen at all 😎

Same here, I took the double bubble off after a month.

I've got an RF1000. Not about to spend on an RF1100 or better unless there's some serious reduction in noise.

My last helmet was an RF1000 and I've been wearing an RF1100 for the past year and a half. It is an improvement but ear plugs are still needed.

Honestly, I think he was just messing with you.
