Motorcycle recommendation?

Might be looking to get a motorcycle to cruise around town. Nothing too fancy, I bought a Honda CB-450T back in the day for 500 bucks and it was fun while it lasted. Just looking for a used motorcycle that is reliable, fun to ride, and not expensive. Thanks

Standard bike, not a crotch rocket or a chopper, something along the lines of a rebel or beginner bike. I am still rather new to motorcycles, even though I rode my old one a few times. Lets say under two grand.
 
In that price range your best option is a Ninja 250R for something newer (5+years old). Performance wise it totally outclasses and embarrasses the other 250s our there. The seating position is not aggressive, and more like a standard than a sportbike. They are a blast to ride and you get to work the whole RPM range while still staying within sane/legal speeds. Also it is fully capable of freeway speeds unlike the other 250s (rebel virago etc) that need a good tailwind.

Other than that other good options are older GS500s (same basic bike as the newer fully faired GS500F, but naked with a round headlight), Ninja 500Rs, Buell Blast, or Honda 750 Shadows. Finding these bikes for around 2K may be a bit tougher. At that price range they tend to have some hard miles on them, but they are all solid machines.

I love the old Suzuki GS series of bikes. I've owned a GS650, 750, and 1000. Of the three, the 750 was the worst performer (the 650 would have blown it's doors off), but all 3 were good bikes. The 1000 was pretty damn heavy, and took a bit more work to manuver around. A 650 or 550 GS would make a great bike, and should be pretty cheap (sub $1000). The biggest problem on these is charging systems. Take a multimeter and put it on the battery with the engine running, make sure you are getting 13+ volts. If not, it's $200 to get a new reg/rec and stator.
