Motorcycle Question

I'm asking this for a friend of mine.

The bike is a 1997 Honda CBR600f3. My friend races this bike on the weekends at Mason County Raceway, so it takes a pretty good beating.

When the bike is cold, it runs pretty good. Last weekend straight off the truck it ran a 7.199 in the 1.8th mile @ 105.41

The problem is, if he wants to ride it around town, or on the highway, as soon as it starts to heat up, it cuts out and starts running really rough. When he gets high into the RPM's or when he lets off the throttle it crackles quite a bit too. I'm guessing that could be the pipe he has on it though.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do? I told him to take it in to the shop, but he doesn't want to do that.

the bike gets quite heated up in town, too much stops and goes...
I drive Suzuki 500cmm, it's naked bike with aircooling and no problems in town.

The temp gauge reads fine though. If we ride it up and down his road for about 10 minutes it just runs like hell. I wonder if the guage isn't reading right.

Did he rejet his carbs when he put the pipe on it (assuming it's aftermarket and a full system especially)?

Did he rejet the carbs after putting on the new pipe? Or are the carbs out of sync? He may also want to try and adjust the warm idle.

Edit: doh! Listen to what the people above said, they beat me to it...

Check the plugs too. And I know this might sound a bit rediculous, but has he checked to make sure the choke isn't stuck? If the cable for the choke is worn, he may be running the bike with the choke on all the time.

Yep, he did rejet the carbs. The pipe is a micron I believe.

We took the carbs off this past weekend and adjusted some screw on the bottom on the bottom of each carb, I can't remember what it's called. The shop that he trusts told him to do that. It was quite interesting 😕

It ran better, but when it heated up it still ran like crap.

The choke cable is not sticking, I checked that this weekend. The idle has been adjusted as well.

I still vote for carbs. Has he had his valve adjustment performed if he's past the first interval for that?

I have no idea on that one 😱

He thought it was the carbs too, but I just thought it was strange that it ran fine until the engine warmed up.

well, i vote Carb too, but he might as well check the fuel filter.

are the plugs fouled?

He says he just put brand new plugs in. But I never saw them myself, I told him we should check them, but he didn't think so since they were new.

well, I might be wrong, but if the plugs foul up again, then its running rich; either too much fuel or not enough air.

check Air filter too.

Oh boy.

What I come up with is carb jetting issues, plugs, and plug wires.

THe second seems to be ok...

If he replaces the wires, and that doesnt do it, then I think it is time to take it to a professional.

The air filter looks good. We've had it off several times. It is a K&N filter.

I'm guessing the fuel mixture isn't right. He thinks it's running too lean.

Pull the plugs again, you might be able to tell if it's running too rich or lean. It may be a pain in the ass to pull the tank, remove the air box, and then pull the plugs, but it may save you some time and head-aches.

They won't look nearly as bad as those pictures, but they may be slightly more like one picture than the other which should help you troubleshoot.

Haha. We've pulled the tank, air box, etc several times. It's getting to be second nature.

I'll have to try to talk him into it.
