As the title summary says, I need a side kickstand for my bike. I have a center stand, but it's damn near impossible for me to get by myself, which will become a problem once I start riding :p

Bike is a 1983 Suzuki GS650G (G as labeled on the bike, GLD according to bikebandit.com). it's something like 470lbs, which is why getting the center stand is so hard.

Bikebandit.com has every part *except* the stand itself (go figure). Bolts, nuts, spring, buff, but no stand :(

Any help is much appreciated :)

so, anyone know if a 1982 GS650 kickstand will fit a 1983 model? I could always pick it up regardless... it's only $10 + s/h :)

You should have no trouble getting that bike onto a center stand if you're doing it right. What you need to do is put one foot firmly down on the center stand and grab a solid point behind the seat. Then put all of your weight onto the center stand and pull back and a little bit up (a very little bit is all you need) with the hand that is holding the bike behind the seat. It should pop right up onto the center stand.

You shouldn't be "lifting" it onto the center stand, rather, your own weight pushing down on the center stand should lever the bike up as you guide it backwards.

there is a trick to it, when I got my cb550, I couldn't figure it out for the life of me, seemed impossible. kept it up and read a few descriptions, I rarely use my kickstand, prefer to have it on center so the bike sits level.

ah i think that's my problem - i've been trying to pull back from the handle bars while simultaneously kicking the stand forward.

There should be a small grab-rail that connects the upper left shock mount to the frame near the LH fender mount. This is where you grab to lift as you step (leverage) on the center stand.

BTW, can you pick this GS650L up if you lay it over? As a rule of thumb, never get a bike that you can't.

here is how you get it on the center stand.

Left hand on left handlebar, right hand under the seat grab handle (near the shock), left foot on the center stand foot rest, right foot on the ground.

Press down with left foot, pull back with right hand and up.. and it will slide into place.

For the first few times, have a friend spot you on the other side (not holding the bike) just in case you tip over.
