The gasket on the johnson rod needs to be resurfaced with an orbital sander.

Sounds like you need to put the back back on its wheels. Things don't work well with the shiny side down.

Its a GS engine..

check out http://www.thegsresources.com/ and http://www.gstwins.com/forum

Gstwin is for teh GS500, but if your got oil in the air filter, which is okay depending on how much oil its leaking. My GS500 will leak a bit of oil too. Its coming from the top of the valve cover.. there is a pipe that goes to the airfilter. Its this filter that leaks oil.

Now depending on how much oil, things can vary. I would start by checking your valves are in spec. Also make sure you dont ahve excess oil in the crankcase, if you do, it usually leaks out of the breather tube.

suggestions?

You don't follow through enough on the throw.

TGG suggested what i'd recommend as well. First check to make sure that you didn't overfill the oil. If so, drain some of it with a turkey baster.

Check that your crankcase breather tube isn't plugged or tied.
I think the only way oil should be pushed out is if there's too much and there's no vent for it to go out.
At least you know your engine seals are alright. 🙂

The bike threw out 1/2 quart on a 90 minute ride, so its not just an overfill problem.

Thanks for the links The_good_guy, I should have googled.

anyways, I suspect that there is something like a vacuum hose that is disconnected.

I just recently acquired the bike, and was told (I tend to believe this person, but its not certain) that the bike had no mechanical problems. HOWEVER, as I was trailoring it back to my place, my tie-downs slipped and the bike tipped over about 30 degrees. Now, I don't know how tipping it over, could cause the bike to start leaking from the air filter, but that is what appears to have happened. Of course, the bike may have always had the leak, and the guy that sold it to my father in law was completely lying about it.

I don't know enough about it to really know. Just thougth I would plumb the depths here before I dropped it off at the shop later.

Thanks! Cheers and Beers

1. too much oil
2. clogged oil passages/filter/sump

the bike tipping over would have nothing to do with the problem you're experiencing.

i would drain the bike, replace the oil and filter, and make SURE you put the right amount of oil in.

also, don't spend $$$ on motorcycle specific oils - go get some Mobil 1 15W-50 and a Bosch filter (if you can find it).

good luck.
