Motorcycle as a first vehicle, viable?

Alright, let's get the basics out of the way.

I'm 18 years old, male. I've got my G1 (Beginners) but have never driven a car, ridden a motorcycle, etc. I've never had insurance.

Would getting a motorcycle be a viable option if I could afford one? I imagine the insurance would be pricey.

So, that brings me to cost.

I'd like to get a Sport bike of some sort. Meaning; something that a Hell's Angel wouldn't be riding. ;) I'm looking for a terribly cheap bike for a starter, can be used. What would you suggest?

Also, where can I go to get an online insurance quote?

Thanks for the help. :)

Well considering how dangerous kids are in cars, you're probably going to kill yourself. At least get a bike that isn't terribly powerful.

You can get a relatively new weak sportbike for $2k.

Just be careful. You can dick around while driving a car, but dont even try on a motorcycle.

My friend got a buell(sp?) blast for his 18th birthday. He had been driving a used jetta before then, and used the bike primarily for fun. He has a blast, no pun intended, with it and hasn't killed himself yet.

I think you need another lisence to drive a motorcycle in Ontario. But its a viable first vehicle. The insurance will be about $2 grand...

Yeah, M1/M.

I don't know anything about insurance; I assume that's $2000 a year? Is that a considerably large amount? How much would it be if I were in a car like...a four door tempo, or something?

Why a motorcycle?

Seems like a good thrill; IMO. I love working on cars, but would really like to start riding motorcycles. One of the other mechanics at the shop I work at has a few bikes, they look like fun.; I'll ask him about some when I get the chance.

Call your local insurance companies to find out the price for insurance for car/bike. You can have a lot of fun on a cheap used bike but the insurance can be expensive at your age, and it can't be ridden year round in most places in Canada.

Only if you live in a sunny climate. What are you going to do in the winter? And I imagine motorcycles in the rain aren't much fun either. Ever have your bicycle slide out from under you going around a slick corner as a kid? Now do it at 40mph in traffic.

If you need to use it as your basic transportation, it ain't gonna be fun. If you're just riding it for fun, it should be doable.

You just need to remember that if something goes wrong, it probably won't just buff out.

new rider, no experience ever... get ready to bend over.

if you are going to get a bike limit yourself to the Ninja 250 and the Buell Blast. There is nothign else i would even ask you to ride cause you dont have the 'road' reading skills. You dont realise this but when you drive a car you learn basic road reading skills, but when you have no such experience its even harder cause there is so much road reading to be done.

www.bike-line.net is who i am insured thru. I pay 30/yr for liablity (90/yr full coverage) but then i am expereinced.. i wouldnt be surprised ifyou see a quote greater than 3K.

The Kawasaki 250R looks great. $3000 MSRP if I were to get it directly from the dealer, but I'd probably look for a used one.

I wouldn't start my driving life on a bike. I did now I can't drive a car they are simpy to bulky and not resonsive. In the end its up to you so have fun either way.

EDIT: I'm a Canadian with a full M but couldnt drive a car if you paid me. (scrary since an M means I can drive cars too).

You have never driven either a car or a bike and you want to tackle a bike as the first thing to learn how to drive when you have to be on the SUPER defensive when riding one. I hope this is a april fools joke or your gonna die trying to figure out the rules of the road, how to drive anything period, and on the look out for ass holes that do not see bikes at all even if you have the brightest headlights installed on running the high beam.

You need to learn how to drive first with some sort of cage protection around you for on a bike the is NO, I REPEAT, NO room for error. Ontop of that you cant get a bike indorsement unless you have a drivers license to drive a car in the first place ;)

OH and.....if you go for a bike with no experance TAKE A LEARNERS COURSE! Unless you want to take a corner and there is some gravel and you tip the bike burning your leg on the exhaust pipe. Or come to a stop light and forget not to stop in the middle of the lane because of all the cars that have stoped at that light with oil leaks left some there for you to lock up your tires and slide into on comming traffic. Or doing 70 on the highway and the ass hat that didnt see you makes you take action go into the other lane hit a car and have your head squished like a pumpkin from the other cars. And no ammount of leather at 70MPH is going to stop your body from being cheese grated on the asphalt :D

I have a drivers license, I've just never driven. Mind you; I've driven around a parking lot, but that hardly counts. I expect to get some road time sometime soon, but after that, I think I'd prefer a bike.

As long as you pay cash for the bike and don't need "full coverage", it can be a cheap/fun way to get around.

You should call a few insurance companies and get quotes on the bike and an alternative car. At least make sure you can afford it before you spend more time on it.

As he said there is no room for error and take a course (help your insurance). However a motorcyclye is 100% safer than a car when you know how to drive. The yellow line is there for a reason.

EDIT: I dont hate SUV's becuase they suck the gas I hate them becuase they cut you off then give you the finger like your the bad guy.
