Motor Trend Car of the Year: the 2006 Honda Civic

DETROIT Nov 22, 2005 ? The Honda Civic, which in its latest incarnation offers drivers a more sleek and upscale take on the popular compact car, has claimed the honor of 2006 Car of the Year from Motor Trend magazine.

All four new Civic models a sedan, a coupe, a high-performance model called the Si and a gasoline-electric hybrid were given the award.

"Honda deserves a standing ovation for not playing it safe again," Motor Trend's editor in chief, Angus MacKenzie, said in a statement Tuesday. "The engineering passion that Honda ? was founded on radiates from these new Civics."

Motor Trend editors put the Civics through two weeks of track testing, performance drives and walk-around appraisals. The magazine chooses its top car based in part on value, standing in its class and significant developments.

"With their bold, contemporary styling and innovative technology, the new Civics are primed for success in one of the most competitive market segments in the country," Motor Trend said in its announcement.

Motor Trend picked its Car of the Year from a field of 28 new models, including the Audi A3, BMW 3 Series, Cadillac DTS, Chevrolet HHR, Dodge Charger, Ford Fusion, Mercedes-Benz R-Class, Pontiac Solstice, Toyota Avalon and the Volkswagen Jetta and Passat.

Last year's winner was the Chrysler 300, the uniquely styled sedan that attracted buyers from rappers to grandmothers. Last month, the publication named Nissan's Xterra its sport utility vehicle of the year.

Motor Trend plans to announce its truck of the year in December.

Bigger engine - more weight I'd guess....The previous generation Civic was available with 3 different engines - the 127HP on the EX, with 32/37MPG - the 114HP engine on the HX, yeilding 36/44MPG - the 115HP engine in the LX/DX, with 32/38MPG. Numbers are with manual transmissions.

Instead of having a hodge podge of engines, and taking into consideration that the HX wasn't a big seller, they switched over to a more powerful and efficient engine. With a manual transmission - it yeilds 30/38MPG, with an automatic, it yeilds 30/40MPG.

Considering that the vast majority of the previous generation of Civics sold were DX, LX, and EX trims models that didn't get the stallar mileage of the HX, I'd say that Honda actually improved the mileage overall.

they tested the hhr? WHY? what for? The other cars i can understand (solstice, jetta, fusion, charger, etc..) but HHR?! WTF!? Once they got into the car, they should've just pushed it over a cliff. UGH, had it as rental once, it's one stupid car. Well, it runs well and all (engine power is sufficient, acceleration was meh-ok, was reasonably quiet, and not so bumpy), but goddamn interior is inferior, and visibility is the WORST i've ever seen in any modern car. Interior has too much cheap plastic, and looks lazily put-together, and window visibility is absolutely horrid. Can't see sh!t diagnally, directly in front of you, and super very little visibility towards the rear. I was just uber pissed that a modern car would have this poor visibilty and very poor interior quality, especially from GM who really needs to make cars of quality materials to get stuff selling. Shiet, I wanted to buy the Saturn Sky, but I could see that the stereo array was similar to the one i saw on the Sky pics, and man, that was one horrible design of a stereo. ergonomics and practicallity was like that of that nissan quest crap.

HHR is an absolute joke. The rear seats should have more room than it should also, and getting into the car to the rear seats is horrible. A civic's rear seats (a friendy's previous gen model) is more comfy and easier to get into than the POS HHR's rear seats.
 
Motor Trend is a joke of a magazine. When you have cars like the Thunderbird winning Car of the Year awards, when the car sucked in EVERY way possible... it just speaks volumes for how they 'test'. Many of the tests they've designed are in conjunction with automakers, like the Figure 8 test that helps some cars get points where others lose them, etc. They use these tests when they feel it's 'right' thus, they bias any result they want to, skewing any numbers.

Car and Driver, while not a LOT better at least gives you better insight as to the 'who what where why' type of questions you might have about technology in recent cars. They are BMW fanatics and will praise near anything BMW puts out. But almost every magazine has a bias. I am a big fan of Evo in the UK -- it's a lot less biased but still has hints of it thru some of the writers. But none of these magazines sell out as badly as Motor Trend has done continually year after year.

Congrats Honda. Been going to the dealerships every Sunday to check them out since I'm thinking about picking up the hybrid version.

The front slope is what annoys me as well. From the bumper to the top of the roof it barely changes. Looks like a wedge of cheese going down the road.

Yes. From a member over at TCL who is in the auto industry:

Assuming the COTY Award still works the way it has in the past, the basic deal is that in making its consideration for the winner, MT requires competitors to include a marketing package with their submission of a car. This marketing package shows how the winning car will be advertised, and how much will be spent on those advertisements, if it were to win the award. A major part of the judging criteria for this marketing package is how these advertisements promote MT and its COTY award itself, and I think the rating of these packages accounts for something like a third of the car's total score in overall judging.
