Motor Oil

Budmantom

Lifer
My car has an "oil life monitor" and it reads 0% at about 7k miles I couldn't get myself to go that many miles on regular oil but synthetic (Mobil 1) should be fine but would it be better to go 5k miles on dino instead, I know it would be cheaper.

Personally I do 2-3K miles on Mobil 1 Synthetic. It's for a high performance car, though. On regular vehicles you should be safe with 5K on regular oil. Your driving habits do come into play on that, though. I don't know how accurate the "oil life monitor" systems work on cars, so I usually just go by miles and end up changing it before it reaches 0% anyway.

wtf, 2-3k miles... it may be a high performance car, but how the hell do you drive it?

guy got brainwashed by the quickie lube dudes.

Check your owner's manual for the best change intervals.

Same here, I run dino, I haven't had an oil analysis done to truly know when to change my oil so I would rather be safe then sorry. Not to mention all teh crap that is too small for the filter that wears at your engine more and more as it's left in there.

The oil life sensors are crap, my g/f has over 12k miles and it has yet to come on.

Your oil is actually in its best condition at about mid cycle, if you change it before that you're actually doing more harm than good.

not to mention how all this consumption is wasting our oil resources.

Your manufacturer makes money on changes, they lose money on warranty repairs esp powertrain. If they thought a quicker oil change interval was needed they'd have printed it.

Now if one races or has heavily modified a vehicle then the extreme duty cycle may still not be adequate.

Most have not heavily modified a vehicle even with all bolt ons possible and even headwork.

I have read a number of articles saying that synthetics (especially Mobile 1) do not hit optimum lubrication until 7-8,000 miles. So changing it every 2-3 is just stupid. I change filter every 5k and filter & oil every 10k.

On my jeep I change the oil a heck of alot more than every 3k. I drive maybe 1k a year and I change the oil maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Of course, it's a '71 jeep with an engine I built in a friend's garage and I beat it to pieces.

Do you just put the oil back in when it leaks out during the filter change?

Ok so i have a 2 block commute to and from work. NO I cannot walk or bike due to the stupid streets. Trust me, others who live in the development say the same thng.

Having said this, i average about 800 miles a month (if i dont take trip durng the weekends). It would take me roughly 6 monhs to hit 5k miles on my car (i use mobil 1).
Am I in trouble if i wait 6 months?

Probably not, but as others have mentioned you could send out a sample and get it
analyzed for a modest fee and you would know for sure..

You're fine with 6 months. I put about 1,000 miles a year on my Tundra truck. I use regular oil and change it every 6 months. I would wait longer but I'm fearful of sludge buildup on Toyota engines.

That's a lot of wear on the car, because it never fully lubricates

What do you suggest? Change every 3 months?

Nope, I let it be. I put the new filter on and put a quart or so back in. (Of new oil)
