motor oil level

Changed the oil along with the filter in my car today. Drained the pan, changed filter, and filled it up with amount specified in owner's manual for oil change with filter. Started the engine and let it run for a minute as I inspect for leaks. Didn't find any so I checked the dipstick as a final check. Oil level was right at "FULL" as I had planned for. Later, I drove about 15miles, came home and checked the oil level again. I checked it after letting the engine sit for 15min and it read 1" above full. Is this normal? I thought dipstick reading wasn't supposed to change that dramatically from cold to hot.

Make sure your car is level when you check the oil. It shouldn't change very much at all from cold to warm, but never check the oil just after the engine has been shut off.. you want to give it a few minutes to drain back into the pan. An inch above full.. It sounds like you checked your oil on a hill....

I'm no mechanic, but is it possible that oil that was in the engine when it was running drained out into the tank that the dipstick measures. I'm not sure if this happens, but it is the only thing I could think of.

I did mention I let the engine sit for 15min didn't I? I checked the oil level second time on same place as first time.

your supposed to do an oil change when the engine is warm.. so it gets all the oil out.. chances are that oil was left in it.

check a few days later.. if its gone down great... else i dont know what to do..

Well I had to drain 3/4 quarts. The valves were making funny noise. The noise ceased after I drained it.

When I change my oil and it calls for 5 quarts,I only put in 4 1/2 then do my checking. I usually end up adding almost the rest of that last quart or whatever amount that brings it up to the line. I just don't want the hassle of having to drain some out again like you had to. Do that next time.
