Motor for rear driver's side window broken, window falls 1/3rd down now.

So my beater of a car (well, 98 Grand Prix) is slowly falling apart and yesterday I discovered that the rear driver's side window was open as I was driving on the highway. I hit the button to no avail so when I got to my destination I took a look at it.

I thought that maybe the contact was bad, but I can hear the motor going but it's not caught on the window - at first I could move the window up with one hand inside and one outside, but it wouldn't stay so now it just sits about a third of the way down and won't go up any higher.

Can anybody tell me how much $$$ I'm looking at for a fix like this? I've never had to deal with this type of problem - first, I'll probably try to find a junkyard around here and hope for some luck there.

Thanks.

Regulator is most likely bad. Cost isnt too much, especially if you can score the part from a junk yard, but it could be a lot of work to replace it since they are often rivited to the door. Since the car is a beater, depending on the condition of the regulator, you might be able to raise the window and disable the motor and just stop using it.

Remove the door panel, slide the window up, and find a way to affix it closed until it gets warm again.

A piece of wood jammed in there usually works pretty well. Since it's a rear window and you don't care you may just want to disconnect the motor and be done with it.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too...I don't know what's going on in there until I tear it open but I was just hoping for some miracle response. Oh well :p

But you're all right, I don't really use the back seat windows anyway so I'll probably just close it up (if I can) and make it stay that way somehow. That next car purchase halfway through next year just looks better and better :p

Car-Parts.com lists 16 used regulators in the AZ area. $75-$150

I had one replaced on wife's 86 LeBaron for $40 labor at a local autoglass shop back in '03.
I ordered the unit of the internet and had no problems with the order or the installation.

Hmmmm, thanks! I'll look into that. If it's that cheap then I have no problem getting it fixed.
