MotoGP: Sepang - A sad day - RIP Marco Simoncelli

Marco Simoncelli lost control of his Honda at turn 11 on lap 2 and crashed about four minutes into the Malaysian MotoGP today, and later died from the injuries he sustained.

He was 24.

Damn, such a shame.

RIP Marco, and my condolences to his family

:rose: 🙁

It was a nasty crash... helmet came off after he was hit by Edwards and Rossi. I was always banking on this guy along with Spies giving the 4 aliens a run for their money once he got more consistent. Guess we'll never know. :'(

RIP SuperSic

Good lord, another motorsport death. I know MotoGP is a hell of a lot more dangerous than auto racing, but nearly every time there's a wreck in MotoGP the guys never look like they're injured.

They get injured. If they don't hit anything most likely they'll survive. However, when they hit something or something hits them. :\

It was such a freak accident. He lost rear tire traction, but still managed to hang on to the bike (didn't get thrown completed off), the rear tire regained traction shooting the bike across the track into the path of Edwards and Rossi. Nothing Colin nor Rossi could have done about it, it happened so quickly.

RIP "SuperSic"

helmet came off. no doubt that was huge in how his injuries turned out 🙁 🙁 🙁

at least he went while he was doing something he loved

Heard about this earlier today. I'm not a die hard MotoGP guy but I do watch the series when I can and I know he was a great talent and possible future champion.

RIP dude.

It's a sad accident, but if someone told me earlier this year that MotoGP would have a fatal collision, I would have bet money that Simoncelli was involved.

The guy liked taking risks, even by MotoGP standards.

Do you think the big hair had something to do with helmet not being snug enough and coming off?

not sure if you're serious, BUT

i've forgotten to snap the retainer strap a few times. luckily i didn't travel too far (or at all) before realizing that. i wonder if that's what happened...

either way, very sad 🙁

I was kind of thinking that too but didn't see the accident. He had a bit of a reputation for being overly aggressive and causing incidents. Again, I didn't see the accident so this may be completely off base. I did watch a MotoGP race a few weeks ago and he placed very well in it. Seemed to be a rising star in MotoGP.

I've done that too. Once you hit 40-50mph and the strap starts flapping around you quickly realize it. At 160mph it would be absolutely diabolical. I can't imagine a MotoGP rider forgetting that though. Cameras would pick that up too.
