Hmmm... well now I'm interested. Anybody have one and know how well they play HD video (mkvs)? Not interested in vid out, just on the device itself.

The Asus Transformer uses the same SoC and 720p MKVs are unwatchable on it. I don't think Tegra 2 has the power necessary to decode them.

Tegra 2s are hit or miss when it comes to video. If its encoded in an optimum manner for the Tegra 2, they play alright. High bitrate stuff chokes though.

My Tab 8.9 chokes on most 720p mkv files as well, though its only HoneyComb still. I believe ICS does improve the video playback some, though I'm not sure how much.

Why not just transcode the files and use a different container that doesn't have as many issues? Most modern CPUs can do this in a reasonable amount of time and many programs will let you set a watch folder to handle the process automatically. Then you can just get the Xoom and not worry about it.

Why would I want to spend days, weeks, or even months of computing time transcoding hundreds of videos when I can just buy a device suited to my needs? I'm in no direct need of a tablet and have no problem waiting for what I want to get to a price I'm good with.

Indeed. I'd say pass on the Tegra2 if HD video is of primary concern.

I'm running ICS on my TF101, 720p plays decently but still stutters a bit even on lower quality 720p mkv's. And then you still have to download apps and tweak settings to even get to that point.

I believe the Tegra3 runs even 1080p very well? I'd like a TF201, but the issues with gps and wifi are a deal breaker.

Definitely getting the next generation tablet if it can do 1080p hdmi output and play HQ mkv's, among other wants.

Ouch, even Hummingbird could handle 720p content without a problem.

Exynos, OMAP4 and Tegra 3 can all handle 1080p mkvs although OMAP isn't quite as good at it as the other two. I've been meaning to test some content on my Xyboard but haven't had the time to do it yet.
