Moto X texting problem after factory reset

I gave my wife my Moto X gen 1 as I had switched to something else. I did a factory reset on it to start it fresh with a clean slate for her and everything works fine but texting: she can't send or receive texts with attachments, or send/receive group texts. Data works fine on the phone as she can get emails and other apps that need data. I can't for the life of me find the setting that needs to be changed as it worked fine when I had it. I narrowed it down to the phone, not the sim and here's the trouble shooting I did:

- Put her sim in another phone and could send/receive texts with attachments fine
- Put my sim in the Moto X and also could not send/receive texts with attachments
- Phone is Lollipop version 5.1
- Compared the settings against a Moto G gen 1 that worked fine (with her sim) and they are identical as far as I could tell. Looked at Messaging settings, Security, Data and a few others
- Cellular data is on and those settings are identical to the G
- I tried a 2nd factory reset after she had loaded various apps to see if it was something she added. No luck with the phone post-reset and still virgin before adding any other apps
- I updated all of the stock apps after the reset so that they're current

I'm completely stumped as to what I'm missing - anyone have any ideas?

Try manually inputting the APN settings for your carrier (you should be able to find your carrier's settings/instruction page via search engine).

That was it. I googled around for a while, tried a few things, and finally found a page detailing adding a new APN. Once I did that, it worked. I imagine I could edit an existing one to match the new one's settings but that's moot. Thank you, sir.
