Moto Droid Verizon OTA update - EPIC FAIL

I completed an OTA update yesterday to my Droid from Verizon - the one that allows Flash to work on the Droid. It killed my Exchange email on the phone...but not my POP3 account.

Verizon's answer...after having me jump through multiple hoops, including factory reset of phone was.....it is a KNOWN PROBLEM...no ETA on fix. If I want Exchange functionality, I had to install Touchdown ($20) which they credited my account for.

WTF...didn't they TEST this update before massive rollout? Were they so thrilled with Flash functionality that they didn't care? I am pissed.

Why didn't you just root and install Sapphire, CyanogenMod, or Simply Stunning? All are light years ahead of anything Verizon and Moto are cooking up.

exchange issues exist on the roms as well with 2.2, it has to do with froyo and some security things they implemented. was talk about it in the SS 4.7 thread as well as some other places. its not VZs fault its googles this time

While I don't mind overclocking/modding my computer stuff...I use the phone for work and need to it to be reliable. After this stupid problem...I will look into other options though.

Ironically, the 2.2 update worked great for me...no Exchange issues at all and it added the functionality I was missing....until this recent Flash update came out.

Sounds like the factory reset option would fix this...according to what Verizon told me yest evening. Apparently your issues can be caused by an incomplete update happening...

Although it is a bit annoying to have to reactivate and reconfigure the phone...give it a shot and see if you can get the core functionality back.

Go to settings - privacy - factory data reset.

I believe the second OTA update for 2.2 was suppose to fix the exchange issue with the first one. I could be wrong however.

I agree with that hanover...huge waste of time

UPDATE: one of the 15 or so other Droids I support starting working on its own again with Exchange. The actual error is that the phone wont connect to the Exchange server citing a security connection error. However, this one phone was left alone and simply power-cycled and is getting emails now. Cannot get mine to finish the setup process for email...it keeps crashing the app.

Touchdown is temporarily working fine...so I shouldn't complain too much.

BAH!

I'm not sure you should be complaining. They GAVE you a free ($20) email app that is better than the stock app. Once they fix their screw up, you should also have access to the stock app. You get both options for free.

It sounds annoying, but it also sounds like they compensated you as best they could. This is your idea of an "epic fail?"

LOL...I am sure I can complain. It cost me multiple calls to their tech support...the first few techs wouldn't even acknowledge an issue BTW...plus having to reset my phone to stock twice and reconfiguring it.

Figure 3-4 hours of my time for a $20 app that doesn't give me more functionality than I had/will use before the OTA?

The "epic fail" is pushing this OTA out because they were in a rush to get Flash onto Droids. Remember, the 2.2 update was originally supposed to be end of June from Verizon...didn't arrive until 2nd week of Aug for me. Then this Flash update was pushed back a few weeks due to "issues".

Anytime a widescale irreversible update crashes a common app...is stupid. The fact that it took me until the 3rd Verizon tech support rep for them to admit a problem and grudgingly give me $20 credit for my time....

Granted, this doesn't happen every day...but it could have been eliminated with proper testing...

This.

And why are you complaining? I'd be ecstatic to get Touchdown for free.

No offense...but I make a lot more than $20/hour (as of today, spent about 4 hours total and counting) and I had to put off work to spend time fixing my WORK PHONE. This isn't an Xbox or iPod we are talking about here...hence the reliability concern.

Also...while Touchdown works, what is the fascination with it? I am curious why it would be preferrable to the built-in Email function.

1. Still broken

2. Still curious - why is Touchdown better than the built-in email? Maybe I am just not using the expanded features...

so you "need the phone for work and need to it to be reliable" and so you went out and immediately downloaded a new update on an already half-baked product like droid? real smart...

I must be attracting those with an axe to grind in this thread.

1. I had never been bitten by an OTA update from Verizon...lesson learned.

2. My response about reliability has been valid...and part of the reason why I haven't rooted my phone yet.

3. I support close to 20 of this exact model of Droid for customers. The phone HAS been reliable...until this OTA.

4. This update adding Flash support has been noticed by my customers as they want Flash...so I installed it for testing.

5. Still broken.

6. STILL haven't gotten an response on why Touchdown is so great. Again, just curious here.

half baked? did the op say he installed CM6 or SS or some other ROM and tried to update?

I mean if you're going from Stock 2.1 to Stock 2.2 there shouldn't be an issue. If there is, then that's bad.

Exactly...although the switch from 2.1 to 2.2 went great about 3 weeks ago...it was the OTA from 2.2 to the new 2.2 (Flash) that caused the issue.

Maybe I should have modded my phone like crazy, then did the OTA and complain when it failed? LOL...
