Takes place in WV. People saw a 6-7' tall man like creature with wings. It was said to be seen flying around, would disturb TV reception when around, peek in windows, and had phychic ability (though that is the least reported feature). A bridge colapsed nearby and it was never seen again. Some people said the mothman warned them, thus the 'phychic' claim. Was anything ever caught or found? No. Was a book written by an alian consiracy nut. Yes. The movie then embelishes on his embellishments to make this phychic, phone talking thing of the movie (it never spoke to anyone).

The 'true events' they speak of are basically the weird animal sightings and the crazy book. No more 'true' than a movie about a phychic bigfoot.

Is the movie actually taking place in Wv? I might go see it just to see how they portray my state and the people in it.
Looks like it does

"When his car inexplicably breaks down, he walks to a nearby farmhouse. The homeowner not only threatens John but tells him he has been waiting for him. John is baffled.

Sgt. Connie Parker (Laura Linney) arrives on the scene and apologizes for the rude reception, but divulges that the entire county is on edge due to a recent series of odd disturbances. It is only now that John realizes that he is in Point Pleasant, West Virginia -- four hundred miles from where he thought he was. It is not logically possible. But here he is. How?

I used to live in Southeastern Ohio in a town called Gallipolis which is right across the river fromt he West Virginia town called Pt. Pleasant. This is where all the mothman prophecies took place. The ones that were portraied in the X-files episode and the ones in the movie. Its pretty much a local ghost story about this creature called the mothman. Go see the movie for what the real stories are but yes there are ppl who believe them and it all got started in Pt. Pleasant, WV.

Born and raised in Point Pleasant, WV. Mothman stories weren't any big deal when I lived there (up until 1992). In fact, I don't think anyone my age actually knew the stories. I never did - I just knew the name and only bits and pieces. I asked my brother and he told me what was basically talked about earlier in this thread.

However, some claim that the Mothman still exists and resides in the TNT area. FYI, TNT is just a swampy wild area with a bunch of fishing holes and dirt roads. Pretty dangerous area at various times of the year. Police have unspoken rule to not go up there unless absolutely necessary.

Anyway, my Mom's former Insurance agent was the County Sheriff during the Mothman sightings and he claimed that he was in the TNT area and lost the use of his radio (some sort of electrical disturbance) and "felt" the Mothman there. He was always a nice guy and pretty stable, but you never know. :Q
