MOTHERF**KIN WINDOWS UPDATE! THEY CAN KISS MY A$$!

god damn windows update. Friend came by with a IBM Thinkpad T40p, telling me that the system just hangs sometimes. I thought no problem, sure I can fix that. The notebook is about 3 weeks old and he said since 2 weeks he has those problems(can't playback DVD correctly, sound stutters, etc.). He has Norton Anti Virus installed and there was no virus found. He told me he updates the anti vir definition every day. So I checked Windows Update. 4 updates available: 1 Intel Driver update, 1 IBM update, 1 ATI video card driver update and one other which I can't remember at the moment. After installing the updates, we rebooted the machine. During the start-screen, the display "build-up" was really slow, you could see how the color changes and stuff. In Windows while draging the windows, it also stuttered so I thought cool, SWEET DRIVER UPDATE YOU GAVE ME WINDOWS UPDATE. I remembered there was "System Restore feature" in WinXP, why not just restore the system? Tried that and it just exited with an error message how it just can't go back to the previous point and if Windows should try the restore again.

1. What kinda UPDATE is that which breaks your video display?
2. What up with that stupid System restore?

I can understand why users don't want to use AUTOMATIC UPDATE. God damn stupid Windows.

I had a similar problem once and that's why I never use drivers from WU, only the critical and XP specific stuff. 🙂

yeah right. Using Windows Update and it breaks your installation. SWEET DUDE! I wanna re-install the ATI drivers, it won't let me, it exists with some weird error. I wanna re-install the IBM drivers, won't let me cuz there is some problem with the "Resources" and it won't let me change the Resources.

PEBCAK.

Chair to keyboard interface error.

I really don't think it's my fault when I use a Windows Update and it breaks the installation. Period. Yes I pressed "Install updates", ok, that might have been a fault.

Yeah, I've dealt with a laptop where someone I know installed all the Windows updates and then the system wouldn't let him login with any username/password. Windows still has a large area to improve...

I have been burned twice by installing device drivers from microsoft update. I will never ever do it again. the only updates i will let it update are system updates.

Anyone who is smart enough to use windows update should be smart enough to know that the drivers on their site are probably 4 or 5 months old already anyway. Additionally, it sounds like you updated everything at once. That was a mistake, clearly. You should only update one thing at a time and make sure it runs fine first, then do the next. Critical updates probably aren't as touchy and you should be able to do more at once though.

THAT way, if one driver doesn't work, you can boot into the "last known good configuration" and run windows just fine.

I never understood the whole driver update through WU before. Where are those drivers coming from??? Seriously, does MS employ a crack team of monkeys churning out drivers? The version numbers listed on WU never match up to the latest released version from the manufacturer...

I don't care. I just think PEBCAK and "Chair to keyboard interface error" are funnier than "ID-10-T." 😛

And everyone who tells me I shouldn't use Windows Update. WHY is it there? Ameesh, can't you guys hire someone(with the billions of profit you have) who looks 24/7 for the newest updates on the manufactures page? You could also make 3 shifts so Windows Update would be useable.
