Motherboards only compatible with either NVIDIA or ATI GPU's?

Are there motherboards that are only compatible with GPU's that have NVIDIA/ATI chipsets? I had never known this, which kind of surprises me. I have no idea whether it's true or not. Is it?

I think you seen something about SLI and crossfire which is restricted to certain boards.

Single-GPU: Nope. Any PCIe video card will work in any motherboard that features the slot. Ditto with AGP.

Dual-GPU: Yes. You need an nvidia-SLI based motherboard to run two nvidia GPUs and an ATI Crossfire-certified motherboard (includes Intel P965/975/P35) to run dual ATI GPUs. It's a given that the motherboard should have two PCIe x16 slots, even if the slots themselves aren't running at x16 speeds.

To add something to what TPL told ya:

You can run two graphics cards on the same mobo no matter what chipset it's using, but only for driving more than 2 monitors, not for 'enhancing' performance by performing the same task together ( that's what SLI/CrossFire is )
