Motherboard wont let me control fans, need fan controller advice *UPDATE*

So, the motherboard wont let me control my case fans with anything software, intake and exhaust only. All I want to do is turn the speed of both down at night to sleep. I dont have a 3.5" expansion slot availiable. I would like something that isnt bright on LED's and dont really care to have touch screen, dont need temp readouts (have cpu-z hwm) and would kind of like to see RPM speeds on either a program or on the unit. Both fans are 3-pin and cooler master brand, 120mm.

This one looks okay, http://www.amazon.com/Scythe-Kaze-Ma...4119845&sr=8-1

I dont need fancy though, nor expensive, I just want efficient and easy.

Since these zalman guys plug back into the mobo, would that allow me to see the new fan speed when turned down?

As long as I can see they are running rpm speed wise, and can turn them to what they are doing now and then down at night, it will work. What would be suggested? Hope thats enough info. Thanks.

u can always clip the LED off on the controller.

And some controllers has the LED removable.

Odd that you couldn't get the software control working, that Gigabyte board should support it. You're sure you have fan speed control enabled in the BIOS?

If you still can't get software working, though, both of those look like decent options. The fanmate is supposed to be more of an install it in the case, set it, and forget it thing, though. But the cables should be long enough that you can run it out the back or front of the case for easy access. And yes, I think the Zalman allows for RPM sensing.

Yea, the exhaust and intake fans wont change. I have them in the PWR_FAN and SYS_FAN I believe, both report readings, the intake at 1200rpm and the exhaust at 2000rpm. The CPU fan changed speeds for me though, so that works but the others wont. It might be that they are both 3-pin headers and I have them plugged into the 3 pin spot? Not sure, but they wont spin down at all.

It looks like the zalman deal should should be able to spin them down, but the mounting will be funny, I dont really care too much though. I have 3 5.25" spaces though, I could perhaps dremel out a space in each cover and make it look decent. With the adapter it has it looks like I should be able to see the RPM speeds reported still.

I just want to know that they are moving at half speed and full speed, and when at half speed, they are quiter then they are now. Right now is decent, but losing half the speed I think would be perfect.

You can also get 5.25" fan controllers that don't look as gaudy as that Scythe unit. This one, for example.

Only problem is getting RPM monitoring to work. What you'd have to do is split the 3-pin connectors on your fans. The RPM (yellow) wire would have to go to one 3-pin connector that plugs into the mobo header, and the red and black wires would go to another 3-pin that goes to the fan controller. I don't know if you can buy splitters designed for this, or if you'd have to wire it up yourself.

I think I might get them little zalman deals since they plug into the headers still and would at least give me software monitoring of the speeds. Im going to just custom fab them into the box somehow, lol. We'll see. At least then I can set it to what I need to and then crank and set.

So here is my update. I got the little zalman fan mate. It does EXACTLY what I wanted it to do, it slows the fans down to an inaudible level and my computer is SILENT but the fans are still moving. The rear fan was the noisy one, I just hooked it up only and it runs between 1150 and 1950rpms, 1950 its noisy, 1150 dead silent. And since it plugs into my fan header it reads out my RPM's so I can know what its spinning at too! AWESOME $5 little tool. Wish I hadnt bought 2 but I guess I have a backup if the first one decides to poop out on me!

Those Zalmans are nice.

Check out your BIOS. In my P55M-UD2 BIOS there is a setting for fan control - PWM, 3-pin and AUTO. The auton function allows you to have a PWM fan in the CPU spot and a 3-pin in the SYS spot - and control them.
