Hello,

I want to build a low power server; consequently, I do not need a fancy featured motherboard. What I am looking for is stability, ECC memory support and *nix friendliness. (The OS will be FreeBSD or Linux). From my research it also appears that AMD processor is better value for this application.

I would additionally like the following features:
- Gigabit LAN - not Atheros, not Marvell 8056
- capability for S1 and S3 resume
- firewire
- underclocking/undervolting
- 1xIDE port
- 2 PCI slots, 1xPCIe

Do not care about/do not need:
- RAID support
- SLI, Crossfire
- overclocking
- graphics support - (will eventually be headless)
- format (ATX, mATX)

I have been looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813157126, which seems to have a good reputation, however, from the manufacturer web-site, it appears that only non ECC memory is supported.

I have also looked at http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813186141, again for the great report on stability, but not even the manufacturer's web-site has any information regarding the memory.

If you could please review the above for any oversight for the intended application and recommend rock-stable, ECC supported, *nix friendly motherboard, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

M

For whatever bizarre reasons, ECC memory has fallen out of style. Nevermind that all crucial portions of the PC storage subsystems are protected by ECC. Well, except for RAM, which is in some ways the most vulnerable of all.

I think it's nuts, and I hope that with Nehalem, ECC will become a desktop standard again, but I'm probably the only one that feels that way. But with 12GB+ of RAM on a system, don't you want some protection against bit-flips?
