Building a computer for daughter and wanted to use Shuttle AN35N motherboard.
It was bought off ths website a couple of years ago and was in storage and had never been
used by me before now.

Troubleshooting

1. Overview of the problem
Motherboard will not POST!
___________________________________________________________________

2. Full description of the problem and symptoms
Need to swap out motherboards and first want to bench build to test.
Assembled Motherboard on workbench with just cpu/fan/video card/ram and
hooked up working psu (400w). Motherboard led lights until I push start button and
then it goes out and nothing happens.
Fan on Cpu is working and video card
came out of another computer that was working.
Took motherboard to computer shop and they advised me it was a bad cpu but
I put it another motherboard and it posts fine.
_____________________________________________________________________-

3. Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
First time motherboard used all other parts came from working computer.

_________________________________________________________________________

4. Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?
Completely repeatable

__________________________________________________________________________

5. I already tried these steps:
Stripped down to MB/CPU/Video/Ram, same result, Removed memory to hear the
the beep code but nothing happens. Tried another power supply and still get nothing.
__________________________________________________________________________
6. My software:
No hard drives installed yet.
_________________________________________________________________________
7. My hardware

* System brand & model, if it?s a pre-built system such as a Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. If it?s not, fill in as much of the information below as you can.

* Shuttle AN35N Ultra
* AMD Athlon XP 1800 or 2000
* e-GeForce FX5200 128MB AGP
* (1) Crucial PC2700 512k
* Antec 350w

8. Other information that might be relevant
All parts have been checked on another motherboard and work fine.

AMD Athlon XP and Duron-processors for Socket A with 200*/266/333/400MHz FSB *)
FSB-setting: 100 to 250 MHz
CPU-multiplicator: 8.0 to 23.0
CPU Vcore-voltage: automatic or 1100 to 1850V - extra-setting: "above 1,85V" to 2,000V
does not support any buffered or ECC-modules
Recommendation: Follow NVidia's list of memory compatibility.

I am trying to find out what the asterisk is indicating, may be relevant to your issue. also would recommend you verify that the ram you're trying to use is un-buffered, and non-ecc, and is on Nvidia's list.

Even without the information that all parts work on another computer - all the behaviors you list points to a bad motherboard. And don't take any computer back to that shop, the cpu is by far the most robust piece of hardware, it is extremely rare for a cpu to go bad unless there is obvious physical damage to it.

If resetting the cmos does not change the situation, then honestly, just buy a new socket AM2 board, cpu, & memory. It's just not worth the time & effort dealing with used motherboards, here or on ebay. Seems to me at least I get flaky boards more often than not.

And to reply to one of robisbell's comments, motherboards like these can and do take ecc memory, the ecc functionality is just not used. There's a difference between what the manual says, and what actually happens when you try it. The board obviously cannot work with buffered memory - but if you were using buffered memory, and that was the only fault, the motherboard would be beeping at you, it would not stay silent.

And FYI, the asterisk is about 200fsb compatibility, is of no concern in this situation, as the cpu is 266fsb - this is stated right in the link provided.

Plus no motherboard memory compatibility list is ever anywhere close to an exhaustive list. Incompatible memory is very rare. It was more common in the pc133 days when generic ram was much more prevalent. But I mean, you have Crucial ram, that company conforms to memory standards. It is compatible.

cubby: do read the manufacturer's spec sheet, and focus on fixing the issue. how you assume to know what a notice on the spec list means when you obviously have not read it, boggles the senses. I'd suggest you do actually read before trying to this again, and do try and at least fix one problem if not, kindly those of us that can.

The memory is compatible it is Crucial unbuffered.
I have looked into just upgrading to AM2 since I can still use my IDE drives. Any suggestions on a good AM2 motherboard?

cubby1223 was absolutely correct in determining what the asterisk means (it should be obvious to the most casual observer), even though it confuses you. It does not support 200mz fsb cpus. He is also correct that it is not relevant in this case as the cpu in question is a 233mz fsb part. He is also correct that the memory in question is compatible.

Your condemnation of his post is pretty amazing and without merit.

Any particular features you might want on a mb? Any budget considerations?

jackschmittusa,
Something I could use existing Ide drives on with built in video. I have been using
Asus boards and had no problems.
My budget is low cost.
I am debating about stepping up to Intel since they are more reliable.
Any suggestions is greatly appreciated since I have not bought in 5 years.

Hard to agree that Intel is more reliable. Really can't help with a budget Intel setup, AMD still seems to be the value buy on a tight budget.

This may sound silly .. but did you ensure that the mobo is on stilts and is not directly sitting on the metal of the case? If not the power will be dispersed among the metal of the case and not power up. Im sure you know what you are doing but it never hurts to suggest these things.

That board should work fine for you. I'm using an older model, but very similar Gigabyte board in a backup rig. Onboard audio should be decent, and the graphics should be better than average. Cpu support seems good as well. I've run both an X2 3800 and a 4600 in my board, and both are fine for a general purpose rig. Get whatever cpu fits your budget (go retail version to get a factory hsf with most cpus)and a couple of gigs of ram. Ram does not need to be exotic, heatspreaders, etc., lots of it available for good prices, often after rebate.

I have the board sitting on a wooden test station that I built in to order to pull parts on and off without messing with a case. I also wear anti-statics when I handle the parts. I have about given up on solving the Shuttle post problem since I don't want to spend anymore money unless it's to buy a new board.

I also found a Asus M2N-MX SE that might fit my budget for general purposes. As much money as I have spent on this shuttle I could have bought a new AM2 board. What motherboard are you running on your main system?

I just put a system together yesterday around that motherboard. It's running Vista Home Premium 32-Bit using an AMD Athlon 64 LE-1600 very, very well.

I put it in this case

I had to reset the CMOS to get the board to post (I seem to be seeing this quite often). I think the board would be a great choice for you.

Were they just out of stock? It's there as of right now.

I picked the wrong one when I Googled it!
That almost matches the one I have in my signature.
Looks like a reliable board and cheap!
