motherboard vs videocard

Man I can't get my Rage Fury Pro(32MB vivo) to play UT smoothly on my ECS K7S5A. I've tried clean install of win98se, new drivers, old drivers, AGP 2x, 4x, tried it set to 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128MB and it still chug..gg...ggg....ssszzzz even at 640x480 16bit. Now I know this card isn't a great or even good gaming card, but it played UT fine at 800x600 32bit or 1024x768 16bit on an MSI K7T PRO. Any ideas why this board and videocard aren't playing(err...gaming) nice?

have you installed the latest SiS AGP driver? Do you have the latest bios? What version directx are you using(maybe you overlooked the update after the install?) I realize you mentioned drivers, but I presume your referring to the ATI drivers. Also, if you haven't installed the patch that lets you run UT from the HDD without the cd in, do so. Furthermore, many are having better results using the default Microsoft dma drivers instead of the SiS dma drivers. I would also check to be sure you've enabled the dma mode for your cd/DVD drives, as after doing a clean install with the K7S5A this was needed with mine, and if your running it from the cd without the dma enabled, could explain the slow performance as well. BTW, don't forget to update your version of UT if it's not the latest release.I hope this helps and good luck🙂

DAPUNISHER, good suggestions.🙂 I should have been more clear, I tried the SIS AGP 1.3 & 1.7 drivers and the ones that come in win98se, no joy. DMA enabled on Maxtor 20GB 7,200 and 16x Pioneer DVD. All the hardware except for the hardrive have been carried over to the K7S5A and it ran UT fine on the MSI. Could it be the ECS doesn't like ATI? Oh the bios is 7/10(lost one board to a bad flash-downloaded and put on floppy using win2k-so won't be taking a chance on the K7S5A again).

That bios is somewhat unstable and lacks several fixes made available being an early release. try this... if you've got an old HDD leftover from the upgrade switch out drives temporarily and do a basic install of win98 then download and flash the latest bios. when your done swap drives again. Even if it doesn't solve the issue you have, it'll certainly resolve others and make your system more stable. Let me know if the card does turn out to be the culprit. 🙂
