motherboard vs cpu which is dead?

Lordyyy

my computer does not have video/no beeps.

how can i tell if the motherboard or cpu is dead? from what i can tell, the only way to check is if you replace the cpu to see if it loads again.

but im just checking to see if a few of these things can also help before i go out and buy something.

- when i take out ram my mobo beeps
- the last time my computer worked was when my water cooling failed, and i continually loaded up to see if my pump actually died or not (it loaded all the time). then i left my computer idle for ~6 weeks and now it will not boot (no video/no beeps)

edit: i have a p4

If you get the memory beep then I would lean toward believing your CPU may be fried. I'm definitely not an expert but if I were troubleshooting and got the ram post beep, I would lean that way. Maybe you can find a cheap p4 chip to try out? Do you have any used pc stores aound? Sometimes they have loose cpu's for pretty cheap.

Just my 2 cents. Hope that helps.

What motherboard? What ram?

I recently did a bios update on my P5B-E and when the computer rebooted
it did nothing, no beeps, no screen, nothing.
I finally found a tip to take out the ram and place one ram chip in the slot
farthest from the CPU.
I did and the board posted. I then had to go into the bios and change the ram voltage
to 2.0 volts. I re-installed the memory and everything has been fine so far.

99.99% of the time the cpu is *not* the problem. There have been tests done with cpus including a P4 where while running game demos, the hsf is completely removed, and the P4 survives and even continues operation without error.

Look for something else to be the problem.

Thats due to the P4 throttling back it's clock rate against the temperature it's running at. The interesting part is how Windows doesn't BSOD when it happens like another CPU did when a similar test was performed. I think it was the P3, BSOD but didn't fry.
