Motherboard/Video Problem

Hey all,

System:

Asus P4S8X-X, P4 3.06, 512MB Corsair, Asus V9280TD Geforce4 TI4200, Antec 430 PS, WD 80GB Special Ed.

My friend recently built a computer and has been having strange intermittent problems, most particularly random (and forced) instances of the display going out, possibly due to overheating, while the rest of the system still runs. What's stranger is that he can get through a game of Quake 3, 45 minutes or so, but crashes Alpha Centauri or any other game for that matter. Also, when he installs the SIS IDE driver, it slows his hard drive to a crawl. The mobo and video have been replaced, and the problem persists. Any thoughts?

Has he tried using different nVidia drivers? non-beta nVidia drivers? AGP drivers if SIS provides that?

Both Asus and Nvidia (official) reference drivers were used, to similar effect: problem remained. :frown: Will see if Sis offers AGP drivers. Any other thoughts?

Is it heat related possibly? Have you tried older nvidia reference drivers?

He tried older Asus video drivers. No luck :( The BIOS reports heat at normal levels...no higher than 36 C.
