motherboard swap

I am having a great deal of difficulty finding information on swapping out an old motherboard for a newer one that needs different controllers, using the same hard drive without re-installing the XP OS.
Can I go into control panel and remove certain hardware items, shut down, then put in the new MB and allow XP to install new controllers? Or, will I get the "blue screen of death no matter what I do?"
Help please.

IMHO, it's not worth it. I always format with motherboard swaps.
