Hi,

I have a Hewlett Packard XG834 (i know yuck) that has an ASUS motherboard with an Intel 810 chipset with a Celeron 766. I know the 800 chip is much better due to 100mhz fsb vs 66mhz of lower celerons. Any guesses if my system could take the 800mhz chip? I know i have to check for sure, but is there anything that automatically rules it out?

Thanks,
Ed

We have a similar HP here at work. It's an 8665 (not looking at it at the moment), I believe.

Has an Asus motherboard running a PIII 700.

The motherboards on those are Asus MEW series, I think. They should be able to take the CPU, but probably see it as a PIII 800. But I may be wrong.

By the way, our model does not have a CPU mounted cooling fan. The air intake became clogged with dust and it began experiencing random crashes, rebooting when the CDROM tray button was pressed and other wierd stuff.

Cleared the dust and it runs great now.

You won't get much of a gain going from a 766 celeron@66 bus vs. the 800 celeron at 100mhz bus. You will probably be spending money for next to no gain on this upgrade choice.
