Motherboard suggestions for Intel or AMD 3.0ghz cpu?

Been quite awhile since I upgraded so I am out of the loop on new stuff. I am sticking with my AGP Radeon 9800 Pro for now. Will get new MB, CPU, and Ram. Looking to run at least 3.0ghz, looking for affordable but fast and stable. Thanks for any suggestions. Doing some of my own research as well but so much new out there.

Thanks to both of you.

In your opinion is this a solid board or is it the upgradability that is the best thing about it? I rather have a better board with my AGP than a mediocore board with the chance to PCI express later.

FOr about the same price (260-270ish) I could get either the Asus with a 3.0ghz or the ASRock with a Athlon64 3500+. What do you think? I have never owned an AMD system, but am open to finally switch over if it is the better choice. I am a bit confused about the AMD numerature, but from my research it appears the 3500 is the better cpu.

The 3500 is a good choice. Intel cpus tend to run a little warmer. My old amd 64 2800 runs just fine as I speak with the fan turned off. Cool and quiet keeps it off until needed, with the help of a zalman fan mate 2 rpm adjuster.

As you can see in my signature, I'm using 2 of the P5P's. Both are stable basic boards. The only difference is in the RAM I use and the CPU. One uses 1 Gb Geil DDR400 (2x512) Dual Ch., and the other is 1Gb of OCZ DDR400 (2x512) Dual Ch, and the CPU's
are 530J & 540J, both are OC"d 15 % and no glitches. (So far) There is a single SATA 80Gb Seagate drive in each case.

If you want AGP and the new cpu plus mobo your options are limited.

AMD:

CPU 3000+ to 4000+ Venice core recommeded unless you want dual core X2
ASrock board (PCI-E + AGP) but you ruled that out already
nForce3 boards (Gigabyte,Epox,MSI,DFI)
K8T800 Pro boards (Asus, Abit, etc....)

Intel

CPU anything but dual core P-D chips (those are PCI-E boards only ... so far)
As for boards, shop around. Start with the CPU you want then find the board that is capable of supporting it. Intel has released too many chipsets to summarize in one post, make sure the one you get has the features you need.

Edited as I made an error... d'oh!
