Hey all. Right now i'm running a PD 945 @ 3.62 but am looking to upgrade to a C2D for the extra performance. I'm *hoping* to find a nice motherboard under $150 to take an E6300 as high as possible on air. I've heard of people getting up to ~2.7ghz with a nice cooler on it, but most of them used expensive boards, which is not possible for me :(. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great.

And on a side note, I am running 2gb of DDR2 667mhz ram... Will that work well with a C2D or should I be looking at higher speeds for memory?

Thanx mucho!

the gigabyte boards are excellent overclockers for the value... i'm not sure how much they are priced but i believe the S3 and DS3 should fall within that range.

As for better memory... ddr2-667 will limit you to 333 mhz fsb or 7 x 333 = ~2331 mhz. if you want 2.7 ghz, i'd recommend you get some ddr2-800 so you can do 7 x 400 = 2800.

but it all depends on the brand and what IC's your ddr2-667 uses. if you know the make and model that would be helpful as there are some ddr2-667 memory that can easily overclock way way above their spec speeds.

Memory is PQI Turbo 4x512 4-4-4-12 with a heat spreader. It overclocks fine, but i've never tried to get it up to 800mhz since my motherboard won't push my CPU that high. It's not the greatest overclocking board, but i usually run the memory at 720mhz... Just not sure how far I can take it since i'm currently limited by the board.

S3 is $110 and DS3 is $140 or so. Both are great OCers and either will get you go 2.7-2.8ghz

Yep, the Gigabyte boards are super easy to overclock. Here's mine earlier this evening after I downloaded 3DMark2001 for the heck of it. Text

The ASUS P5B / P5B Deluxe motherboards are also quite popular.

Hard to go wrong with either brand. Make sure you get the 965P chipset and not the 965G and you are golden. ;)
