I am not familiar with that computer. But, many HPs use non-standard dimensions. So, you may not be able to fit any motherboard in it. If you want to change the motherboard, why not get yourself a case as well? Then, you will have lots of choices. A good case is not necessarily expensive.

AFAIK, all HP computers contain "Proprietary Features" that make their power supplies non-compatible with ATX (industry standard) motherboards, and their power switch connections from the case to the motherboard also differ, so you can probably salvage the RAM, if it's fast enough for a modern system, the video card, if it has a separate one, and if it's not too outdated, possibly the display, and the storage devices.

Gateway sell a few systems based on standard parts, as does Dell, but in the latter case, it's a case of VERY few. Almost any major brand name you would be familiar with is probably proprietary.

I am facing this same problem with a HP a350n. It uses a microATX motherboard with a nonstandard power connector.

Some PC producers make a pretense of catering to those of us who would like to work on our own machines, but most don't list parts pricing that is anything at all like a competitive comparison to the White Box standard parts market. I think that HP was at one point somewhat less mercenary about the costs of replacement power supplies, but I wouldn't make bets on being able to buy an HP motherboard these days that would fit that HP case for a price that is reasonable, if there even is anything available at all.

Be careful about replacing a mobo on an HP. They put an embedded chip on their mobo's, which is required to enable the OS the HP pc came with. In other words, if you replace the mobo you may need a new OS also.

See this LINK from an HP forum.
