Motherboard question.

I have a motherboard, it has 24 pin power connector and then also has a secondary power connector. The secondary one is 8 pins, but the motherboard came with a black cover that covered 4 of those pins, does that mean you can use a power supply with the extra 4 pin connector or do you have to have one with the 8 pins? If you have to have the 8 pins why would they cover the 4 addtional slots for that power connector?

Also the reason I ask is because, I have a power supply with the 8 pin connector, however when I try to start the computer, it starts to power up then stops. Does this sound like a motherboard problem? Maybe it's being shorted on the case? I don't see how it's sitting on brass studs.

It should say in the manual but a 4 pin secondary connector seems to be the standard on most motherboards. Do you have the extra power adapter plugged into your video card. You may want to post your complete system specs here.

Re-seat your video card and/or RAM - maybe the CPU too. Yes, you should check your mobo's manual to find out what is actually needed. Perhaps you are using a dualie mobo w/ only one CPU - in that case, you wouldn't want to be driving the unloaded on-board regulators, so you'd want to use only the 4-pin CPU power. If you don't have your mobo's manual for some reason, you can always DL one from the mfr's web site.
