Motherboard question (forget Abit, they say no) on KX7333R and 333 bus, Anybody done this ??

This motherboard has a KT333 chipset, and so does my A7V333R ASUS motherboard. I go to the ASUS site, download the new bios, and they say no problem. I go to the Abit site, and no bios update that says it supports it. I email them, and get a lame excuse.

Has anybody done this on a KX7333R ??? (used a 333 mhz bus by default)

Edit: I just ordered a XP2700+, and it comes on Friday. I want to know in advance if I can put it in that one (I will try, if nobody says they tried and failed) I really didn't want to put it in the other box I have.

It should work no problems. KT333 boards support 166 (333 DDR) bus while keeping PCI and AGP in spec. You may have to properly set the FSB after install.

Have you tried this on this motherboard ? Abit said something about it being a KT333cd, and that did not support it, only the KT333ce (or something like that.) I thought they were all the same. Can anybody verify this ??

I have not personally used the KX7-333 (tend to stear clear of Abit boards myself, prefer whiskey 😉 ), but the word on the street was that the board was a very good OC'er, capable of running 166 Tbreds. The stepping there may be an issue though.
May I suggest the Abit sponsored board over at amdmb.com? Link

edit: from this thread it looks like the problem isn't the 166 bus but the cpu speed itself is not supported. Ver 1.0 of the KX7-333 only supports AXP's up to 2100+ 🙁 Looks like the board doesn't support multi's above 12.5, sorry

I just downloaded new bios. The bios says you can do 12.5/13 or over 13 multiplier. The bus I know I can manually update to 166. I will let you all know on Saturday (assuming I get my cpu Friday like I am supposed to, it left Florida this AM) if it works.

Edit the 2700 runs at 2.17 ghz=166*13 and my 2100 runs at 1736=133*13. Interesting. This is just pumping up the bus. My new Vantec 7040 HSF should get me OC'ed a little!!

Your processor probably will work ... but not at the default multiplier.

If your going to want to overclock it, this may be no issue,,, since you can drop the multiplier and raise the FSB.

But if you want stock speeds ... the multiplier wont be there.

If so ... put it in you other box.

Check out my AMD box.

I just found this on the Abit site to confirm my earlier:
" AT7 and KX7-333 was adopted VIA KT333 chipset which can not support 333MHz FSB CPU. AT7-MAX2 and all KD7 series support 333MHz FSB CPU. KD7-E of KD7 series uses VIA KT333 CF version (*1), others (include KD7-RAID,KD7E,KD7-B,KD7-S,KD7G)use KT400 chipset."

I think it may work anyway, but I will reply when I get my CPU SickBeast, so you will know for sure ! I have the b6 bios now.

didnt look at my signature ???

Im running 189.4 FSB
(case you cant read)

I have the KT333 chip (not ce)

Isnt that proof it runs OVER 333 ???

Like I said b4 ... you probably wont have your defualt multiplier.
(which means yo need to unlock it BEFORE you put it in the MB)

Noid, sorry I missed that, but my concern was also the multiplier. Since my multiplier is 13 now, and the 2700 is 13, I should be fine, just OC my FSB to ??? (probably start at 180 or so to be safe), but I will know for sure on Saturday.

no ... to be safe ... start at 166 x 12
(this should give you enough room to see if you MB will go as high as mine on the FSB WITHOUT overclocking your chip)

I'm using 11.5
so up your FSB from there...

Before you try to reach my FSB ... check NB for proper thermal paste.
(mine had a drop... hardly enough)

Im using AS3,,, and I'm also thinking of putting a crystal orb on it.

OK, I got the chip today, had to boot three times, and it came up as a XP1500+, went into bios, set the cpu to user define, 166 FSB, 5:2:1 FSB:AGP😛CI and multiplier to >=13. It boots as a 2158mhz CPU id, and in windows CPU-Z says 2162.7, 166.4 fsb, and 332.7 mhz. The Model says KX7333R, but chipsays it ID's as KT266. The other data says family 6, ext family 7, model 8, ext model 8, stepping 1, revision B0, but the specification says XP2600+.

I am typing on this now, and it seems OK, does any of this information seem "funny" for a XP2700+ CPU ?

Ok, here is the latest. Under 2000 it works OK, but under 98SE, I get all sorts of errors, so something is not right. I put it in my ASUS A7V333, and it works great. Now I will have to get something better for my primary box. (motherboard, cpu and memory) At least with the Vantec 7040, in the Antec case, even with 5 case fans (3 come with it, and setup for 2 more) it is really quiet and fast !!!!!

I suspected you might not be able to get the 13 multiplier. (your chip defaults)
Your specs are the exact same as my defualt for the xp2600 I have.
(which makes sense)

If your not overclocking, leave it in the other board.

I just upped my multiplier to 12.5 x 183.4 = 2292Mhz now.
(after cutting my 3rd L12 bridge)
I also dropped the fsb to 183.4 (was 189.4)

- 3dMark2001 = 16,403 now

My crystal orb on the northbridge didnt get my FSB above my 189.4 limit.
(one of my PCI cards craps out)
But, since I upped the 5v rail again.. It did drop the NB temp to 28C. (was 32C @ 5.25v)

I'm going for a voltage mod now. I'm ordering a 100k Cermet for the Vcore regulator to up the Vcore limit to 2.15.
(currently I'm capped at 1.89v)

I know the chip does 12.5 x 189.4 (2367.5Mhz) but I dont have enough voltage to run Prime.

That's kick ass if you ask me ... (for a 85 dollar MB)
_____________
As for upgrades ... I'm waiting for the NF7 rev1.2 ... it's being made as we speak (rumors)
The Dual DDR for my PC3200c2 at 200mhz should be awsome.

So,,, it may be here in a month hopefully.

Noid, I DID get the 13x multiplier. The problem was, it was unstable in 98SE, which is my primary gaming OS. 2000 was fine. Anyway, I put it in the A7V333, and uppped the clock to 180. It is very stable, and after a week or so, I will up it some more. I just ordered a 2400 to put in this one (the KX7333R) from newegg, and it will be here mon or tues. I will let you know what I get for a OC then.

You can't run the chip stable beyond ~2163mhz without doing some serious voltage it seems .
I've been playing around with all kinds of setting with my xp2100 tbred-b and is stuck at 133x166.
Anything beyond will boot, but usually get a blue screen after running windows for a while.
The newest bios allow it to support xp2600 max, I don't know if that is the problem.
In the abit forum, they say the motherboard will no longer be supported by abit unless
there is a huge problem with it.
I think from now on, no more abit.... their support seriously sucks.

Wai ...

Oh contrary ... I ran my chip at 2292 overnite for 12 hours doing Prime95 AND 3dMark DEMO on NON-default with sound on.
(still running Prime95)

Thats at 1.89v (1.85vBIOS) with full load temp of 52C.
Idles at 27.5C

My previous overclock was at 1.8v @ 11.5 x 189.4 = 2177mhz (BIOS setting 1.775v)

You need proper cooling, thats all.

that's a serious vcore boost though.
Compare to others people with different board, they can achieve >2200 without upping to 1.8vcore.
Right now i am at 1.7vcore@ 2163mhz (13x166).

You also must realize my 5:2:1 divider is all I can use on this MB.
(the KT333 was never intended to run 333 let alone 379 [189.4fsb] )

If I had a NF2 MB I could lock my PCI and my AGP and get 200fsb at 1.80
Just check some of the NF2 forums.

At 189.4 my AGP is 94Mhz and my PCI is 47Mhz

So I have to up my multiplier instead. (more voltage)

Oh ... And I forgot about the Abit support ... I called them about the memory slots
(I use 2 & 3 to post above 180 I think)

And they said ... emphatically ... NO SUPPORT FOR OVERCLOCKING...
(which makes sense)
_____________________________- EDIT _______________________
... I failed Prime95 today 😱 ... I'm back to 11.5 x 189.4 = 2177 @ 1.775v

oh well .. still waiting for the NF2 1.2 🙂
