Motherboard/PSU Issue...

Ok I just got a new box, so I started swapping everything into the new PC case from the old a few hours ago. Everything was functioning perfect before.

I connected everything and for some reason nothing would turn on. So I figured it'd be the PSU, so I took it out and ran an external test (with the paperclip) and powered up the DVD drive and one of the fans separately.. and they worked fine.

So I plugged it back into the motherboard, and all I heard was "one beep" coming out of the PSU itself after clicking the power switch.

So I moved the P1 connector after I pressed the power switch, and the fans and all other components would start working for a split second. I kept tugging it left and right slightly and everything would power on and off constantly but no consistent state. Finally smoke started coming out of one of the fans.

I have no idea what would cause this considering everything was in perfect working condition in the box previously?

Is it the P1 (20 + 4 socket) connector on the PSU itself, or the port on the motherboard?

I had similar problem when swapping components to another case. In my case it was a loose screw under the motherboard causing the short circuit.

What do you mean a loose screw? The screws that mount to the case itself?

My motherboard doesn't exactly fit into the new case so there's empty slots for 2 screws. How can I check this? Take the motherboard out completely and try wiring everything up again?

Thanks.
