motherboard problems

So I decided to use an old motherboard for an HTPC and after connecting everything with known working parts, I try to power it on. The power supply starts whirring for maybe a fraction of a second on the first try, then nothing. If I press the power button after that, no sound come from the power supply. Oddly enough, if I disconnect the PSU and reconnect it, the next time I press the power button the whirring sound reappears.

The green light for the motherboard is on. The power supply is known working from my main box. I have disconnected all other peripherals. Does this sound like a typical motherboard failure? this makes me a sad panda 🙁

Ok, start by making sure that the motherboard's ATX12V receptacle has the PSU's ATX12V cable in it. The ATX12V cable is distinguished by having two yellow wires and two black wires, not one each of yellow, red, orange and black.

Fixed the problem. It seems that the case's original motherboard screws were causing a short in the back. I even got a little scare when the old 9700pro started beeping at me...then I realized I needed to plug that sucker in 😛. Ubuntu + MythTv Time!
