Motherboard problems?

Hello!

My girlfriend's computer just blew up last night and I've brought it back to mine to see what's wrong. Basically, it won't turn on.

Checked the PSU with my unit, it's working fine.
Attempted to use my PSU with her computer, but still no luck. I plugged her HD into my system and all files were fine and uncorrupted.

Big question:

Is the motherboard blown in which case I should buy her a new one for her christmas present? :p

Hi,
What do you mean by blew up? shrapnel, flames, people running down the street screaming?
Or, did it just turn itself off?

Any errors? when it went.
BSOD? what message?
What specs?
What psu?
what mobo?
what case?

Hi montag,

Basically it was working as normal, then suddenly the screen goes black, like there was no connection with the video card, so I unplugged the monitor lead and put it back in, but still no luck, so I switched off the computer hopeing that it will work (did a cold boot by pressing the reset button). Upon trying to switch it back on, it just refused to power on!

So I attempted the PSU swapping thing, but nothings happening, I keep thinking its the motherboard...

What do you think?

Sorry, mobo is an ASUS, not sure which model, PSU is a very bog standard one, but it had 400W on it powering A 5200FX vid card and a 120GB HD, thats about it really.

Specs:
512 DDR400 RAM
2.50 P4 processor

Did you try swapping out the video card?... Also try clearing the CMOS & see if that fix's the problem, if not Asus should replace the mb if its still under warranty, just be advised they are very slow & your gf will be without a PC for a couple weeks minimum.

Hi again,
what psu swapping thing did you do?
Did you put a different psu in the system?
Did you try that psu in another system?
That is psu swapping.

I swapped the existing PSU with my PSU and tried powering my computer with it, and it was fine. But when I tried to power her one, it didnt work. So I swapped it back into my computer as before and it worked fine again?!

Tested all the wires and they are all fully connected. Even tried to start the machine by sticking a screwdriver on the on/off pins to see if it's the switch mechanism thats broken but still no luck.

Pulled out the video card and tried to power it on but still nothing.

Anyone got anymore suggestions before I go buy a new motherboard? :s
