the story:
I supplied a friend with a new mainboard (Gigabyte 6VTXE) he wanted to upgrade his computer.
he kept everything from his old system except the mainboard.
after he installed the mainboard the computer didn't started anymore and the power supply was smoking in an instant
so all the PCI cards are not working now, the CD-Writer is not working and of course the mainboard
yet the AGP VGA, HDD and CD-ROM are working.
I have opened the PS and it is burned on the 5V part.
he claims that he installed everything correctly (he has the necessary experience)
the question:
is it possible that the PS burned because a bad mainboard? or it was a pure coincidence and everything happened because of the PS - the PS is not a quality one ?
I will be grateful for a documented reply
:(

Perhaps you should try another forum?

The HT forum is not for troubleshooting. More people will see your post in somewhere like General Hardware.

you'll get better help in the hardware forums...

1. Did he connect the power connector correctly? If it is connected incorrectly (very hard to do cause there's only one way you can plug it in), the PS will INSTANTLY SMOKE.

2. Is the power supply rated for the CPU speed? If not, it is possible you overloaded the power supply and will INSTANTLY smoke it also.

I'm leaning towards #2 since you said everything else didn't get replaced.

I am sorry but I was looking for a hardware expert. It was not about troubleshooting.
The question is if a bad mainboard can do something like that, and if it was like that whythe protection of the PS did not worked?
I was really looking for someone who knows. I am sorry if I have misunderstood the aim of this forum.
Incorrectly conected power connectors are out of the question.
Only the mainboard was changed, the CPU was kept ( celeron 700) so overload is also out.
Actually what happened is not something ordinay that is why I was looking here for a answer and maybe I was not very clear. so again - can this be from a bad mainboard?

He must have caused a short. I would think you would draw too much current and trip the breaker or something before that much damage would occur, but obviously not.

I've seen this happen twice. Both times the power supply was the problem, not the mb or components...
