Motherboard outside case

If you want to run your computer with the motherboard outside of its case, what surface should you put it on? Can I just set the motherboard on my (sawdust and glue, or as Ikea calls it, "wood") table? Or should I put it on the anti-static bag that it came on?

(The reason I don't want to mount the motherboard inside the case is that the case may be contacting the motherboard in some place and shorting it out, so I want to remove this possibility...)

Thanks,
Mike

Put it on top of the beautiful artistic cardboard box the motherboard came in.

I usually have it on those foam backing that usually comes with motherboards (have enough collected through the years to carpet the house). Or your friendly corner computer store would be more then welcome to give you some from their stockpile that needs to be thrown out!
